Anyone else have a jug of various left over oils ?? If your devoted to a certain brand, I would assume not, but I tend to go with what I can get a good deal on and true to form , I usually have a little left over each time. I am currently building a left over jug of about 1 1/2 qt of Maxlife 5w30...about half a qt of Pennzoil Ultra 5w20..and a qt of Mobil 1 0W20. Since my truck is waayy beyond warranty, I will use it at some point in it. Who else has a stash of left over's ?

I have an old 5 litre plastic jerry can that I cleaned out and started dumping random oils in. Initially it was just my 'top off jug' but its now basically full of oil.

I think its a combination of Motomaster Formula 1 (FormulaShell) 5w30, Quaker State 10W-40, some leftover Motul 10W-40 motorcycle oil, and possibly some Co-Op DMO SAE 30 diesel oil.

Or, wait, it also has some Motorcraft 5W-20 in there too.

So all in all an interesting mix thats sure to terrify people who believe in oil incompatibilities.

I've got a couple of jugs of "drippings" from my dumpster diving. They're a general mix of all brands and all weights, conventional and synthetic. All I can say for sure is that it's clean.

Any fresh oil is better than sheared old oil. All the [censored] on this site really never addresses that fact that OIL IS OIL. From 0 to 40 weight , as long as you don't run it past its use full life, you can mix about anything. Don't put too much stock from amateur scientists and their dire warnings abut mixing oils. Yes the combined ad packs might negate some benefits , but so what. Why would they make SEMI-SYNTHETIC. Isn't that a mix of oils.
I been doing it for 40 years in over 50 cars i have owned. I have never had an engine failure yet. I have 2 cars with 250-320000 miles. Living proof. Basically I try to get viscosity close to manufacturers recommendations for mileage reasons and be sure that a turbo creates a different reality , but mix away.

I keep my leftovers that are less than a qt/L in their original bottle and don't mix them until I'm ready to use them. The next oil change or top up I'll use the leftover orphan bottles first.

Lawnmowers, chainsaws etc always wind-up with a frankenbrew of one sort or another since they are at the bottom of the pecking order.

No, but its likely to cause your engine to fall out and if you touch the stuff, you may go blind.

Who said that...?

That is not true and you know it, (it just makes hair grow on your hands).

Somewhere there is a thread about a guy who on purpose used different weights/brands all the time. IIRC right, his engine went way over 100K.

I keep them for my OPE, too, but I don't mix them, except in the drain pan before I recycle them. Even that bugs me.

I heard diesel oil was good for a Saturn that uses oil. There were good sales on diesel oil. Now I am using 2 quarts of SuperTech 5w-20 with 2 Quarts Castrol Tection 15w40. My 99 SL2 with a 80,000 mile used motor seems to purr. I top off with some 10w30 I have laying around. I have violated every rule of BITOG regarding not mixing oils.

Even added a little LC20 and with a little #132 Moly EP. It is hard to tell what I have now since it is using a quart of oil every 1,000 miles or so. This seems to be a good summer mix since I get some cleaning benefits of the HDEO and get to get rid of old oil. I would prefer to just run 5w30 but I listened to the wrong people years ago.

My car has almost 190,000 miles on it and for a good 100,000 miles it has been on brews dreamed up by yours truly.

The car is fine, but I am now shaving my palms every day.

There are those who follow the mix your own random blend practice as a matter of economy all of the time.
A quart of this on clearance, a quart of that on clearance, the leftover oil from the last change and so on.
There are even some UOAs posted here of random blends that look perfectly okay.
I doubt you'll hurt anything by running a mix of leftovers unless you have an engine with really demanding specs.
I don't do it, but I can't say that I've seen bitsa blends cause any harm.

My intention is never to concoct some "magical " brew that will make my vehicle last forever, give me 100mpg, and make me attractive to hot women

I just hate throwing away good oil..especially for what it costs these days. It's good to know I am not alone in my frugal ways, mix on my friends !

Sounds like you made up your mind before posted the thread.

If you use a small volume of different brands for top up only I am ok with that.

However, if you mix a quart of this with 0.5 quart of that and so forth and so on potentially ending with more than 5, 6, 7,........etc of different brands to make up a 5 quart brew for a full oil change then this practice is nuts, crazy, silly etc IMO and should be referred to the BITOG rehabilitation clinic for immediate treatment and attention.

Unbelievable.

I certainly hope the main oil brands do not produce oil this way !!!

How exactly is that treated in rehab?
