This came off a vehicle that uses or fits an XG7317. The mileage is on the filter housing, as well as date. It says "HPL EC ADDED." I made it pretty much exactly 10,000 miles out of what the filter says it can do, 20k miles before OCD got the better of me in "having" to change it. This is what I found.

Garage has "poor lighting" so I did the best I could with angles.

How did that tear in the next to the last picture happen? Did it happen in use or for dissection purposes by you?

I did that. I introduced my screwdriver to the paper (? paper) media to try to show what was saturated, etc. It did not leave the can like that.

If given a little more time, maybe I could pop it off the metal "core" entirely.

ARCOgraphite states:
Looks like it held up, but that thing is loaded.

Oh, for sure. HPL EC was used.. and since this engine is "more than likely" a little bit of an oil burner (it can be challenging to read the level. One side has a different reading than the other, I've been told to always use the lower reading..) it also may have seen some MMO in limited amounts. The oil burning I am watching. May give the EC another go. This fill had seen some HPL 0W-20 Supercar as well.

Now if only I could do a controlled documentation of what went in, what had to be added, when. But yeah that filter is mucked up.

10,000 out of a rated 20,000 miles. I've got a regular old white can filter on there at this time...

Thats the filter I used on my 07 Accord...It had 386000 on it when I traded it in...My guess on this one is a Honda or a Toyota..
Nice! A gen 7, right? The gen 7s had awesome interiors. Imo one of the best Accords (y)

Why use this thing instead of a Tough Guard?? Who goes 15k or 20k plus on this filter anyway except maybe a tiny fraction of the percentage that buy these? . I know the material is softer on the XG but I have seen TG's with more mileage than this and they seem to always stay in good shape compared to this new XG.

The XG7317 is also spec'd for my 2021 Subaru Forester! So I'm clear, did you say there are 20,000 miles on the filter? How many miles were on the oil?

I ran a "classic" XG on an 21 FB 2.5 in a new Outback we kept briefly. OCI#2 and the dang thing toasted and melted the gasket to the filter mounting flange. Almost could not get the filter off with a strap wrench and its right up top! Run a factory style Tokyo Roki - If you can find 'em. Even if it cost 10 bucks - it's worth it.

Great info to know . . . thank you. Sounds like you ran the Ultra for 12,000 miles which should have been easy for the Ultra. I'm currently running a Purolator One and plan to go 2 - 6K OCIs with it. We'll see how it performs!

The pictures reveal a history of poor maintenance. Please realize: A dirty engine from poor maintenance will contaminate the new engine oil, and will clog the oil filter. The solution: More oil and filter changes. If the oil gets dirty and dark, change it. Don't go by miles alone to determine when to change the oil and filter.

The base gasket was actually melted? Hard to believe unless the filter was mounted to the exhaust manifold, lol. A filter being "stuck" to the mount doesn't really mean the rubber gasket actually melted from the heat, which probably wasn't much over 225F.
