Fram Ultra XG7317 on a Honda Accord 3.5 V6 issue: I am pulling off the current M1 filter, having also use Amsoil filters, and find that the standard oil filter cap does not fit. I also checked a Purolator filter on the shelf, fits fine. All the other filters have been fine as far as the standard Honda oil filter cap. It looks like more of a clearance issue than just the non-slip paint . Has anybody else run into filter cap fitment issues with Fram Ultra filters ?

Your talking "oil filter cap" like what's used on a cartridge filter ... but the XG7317 is a spin-on filter.

No - he means cap like the cheap stamped wrenches that fit over the end of a filter, like a socket

I've never needed a tool to reinstall a filter. Just spin that sucker on by hand. Easily done on the J-series.

Aaaah, yeah I didn't see that.

Don't think a standard "cap tool" will fit on Frams with the texture grip. The texture grip does work pretty good for installing and removing the filter by hand if there's enough room for a good grip. I just tighten to 3/4 to 7/8 turn by hand, and have been able to remove them by hand.

Perhaps I used the wrong name- oil filter cap wrench? Its the cap style tool that fits over the oil filter itself, used to remove the filter. Many filters are difficult or impossible to remove without a tool, especially if they are in a cramped location like the Accord. I would rather not have to take off the wheel to get more room.

Believe it or not, I have a 2 different oil filter caps(as you say) for each, the Purolator & FRAM. I also use the Ultra 7317 or Puro 14610-12 or OEM Nissan or Honda filters. You wouldn't think so but, the filter caps fit slightly differently from one another.

This way, I can buy any filter that Purolator or Fram make for other companies. IDK if either cap/wrench will fit other filters that WIX(NAPA) or Champion(AC Delco or SuperTech etc.), make for their respective applications but who knows? They may!

I also noticed that my cap wrench will not fit the fram ultra 7317 but fits other brands just fine. I did not try other brands of cap wrenches, but picked up one of these (pic below). Works fine in the Odyssey without removing the wheel...just turn sharp right (and jack up the front end a few inches if you need extra room). I don't know if the Accord is similar.

This is my only compliant with Fram Ultras. I wish Fram would ditch that coating.

I do use the above type pliers on them. Folks have posted in the past that there is a cap wrench that fits them though I haven't searched it out yet.

I have a few cap wrenches I use on 7317 equivalent applications. I've found that even when it seems like they fit correctly, sometimes there's just enough play the filter gets wedged in the cap. I've had that experience, once recently with the XG7317, and equivalent application filters from other manufacturers. Means the cap comes off with the filter. Ime, a light tap or two on it with a small hammer knocks it off.

That said, seems a favorite cap wrench on bitog for these (7317/6607& equivalents) is the LISLE 63600
cam action cap wrench. Most seem to like it. I like that it goes on the end of the filter as opposed to the plier type which require perpendicular access at filter. Ime, in Honda filter orientations I've found the former better suited, yemv.

Rubberchicken, you piqued my curiosity, so I went into my garage to see if Honda's OEM oil-filter cap/wrench (call it what you will) will fit on the XG7317, and you're correct: it doesn't. However, since I put that filter on with a gloved hand, I'm going to assume I can remove it by hand.

Well-you can find the FPS7317s that don't have the coating, but I'm with you on the Sure Grip-it seems to fall off & rust rapidly occurs, whether just a crack or a whole patch falls off.

I use the same pliers for the Odyssey, but with a green handle. $4 at WM. Ironically I bought them to remove a stuck plastic drain plug on a Pentair pool filter housing. Turns out it works great in both applications.

the black grippy coating on Fram filters makes them slightly larger - which renders some of the cap wrenches too small. I have the pliers, like above - but this is also another reason I use the Professional Fram filters - no coating. plus, the coating holds in heat.

I had the exactly same problem with Fram Ultra last month on both cars (different sizes). The cap tool used to work fine until then. I had to get one of the strap type wrenches

Frams with the grippy coating are for HAND INSTALLATION ONLY. You are doing it wrong using a wrench. If that is a handicap for you, try another line of filters without the coating.

I had the same issue with PH2 size filters. The Motorcraft 820s has like 36 groves on it, the Fram (and many others) are 1/2 that, and they make filter wrenches for both (and I own both).
For me, it has nothing to do with the coating and it is the size and shape of the can that is the issue.

Some folks turning grip are not as strong as what's required, so the filter will not leak afterwards. It very-well may leak!
I add a quarter-turn with a wrench after hand-tightening and nobody will tell me I'm doing something wrong.

No sirreee!
