yes, that looks like one of those high precision, Mil-spec close fitting filter cap wrenches

But this raises a good point: I checked a few websites such as Fram, Mobil 1 etc., and nobody lists the wrench cap specs required for specific parts. Other than physically inspecting each filter and cap, how does one obtain the required wrench cap ?

As far as I know the only way is trial and error. This particular hyper tough wrench fit very snugly but went on/off easily. Whether the next one on the rack would fit is anyone's guess. If I needed one, I would take a filter out of the box and try it before buying. Or buy one of each brand and return all but the one that fits. Gotta love walmart return policy!

Get this tool for removing any XG7317 size filters. It will get them off no matter how tight and that coating actually makes it easier.

Seen that one recently on Amazon. With the serrated teeth it's a more aggressive (and more expensive) version of the previously noted Lisle 63600 cam action cap wrench for 7317 size filters. Looks interesting. On very aggressively installed ie., over tightened filters, looks like it could be useful.

So far it has worked on all filters in its size range no matter who made them. This is a tool I enjoy using because I know it will work. So for me, the $17 is worth it to have something that will make it easy regardless of the filter brand, it's coming off. Who knows what the next filter sale will be if it goes in the jaws of the tool it comes off.

Got those pliers in the collection … just used on outboard motor where the filters (fuel/oil) had been on for a long time
