Fram Ultra XG 7317 Build Quality

Fram uses the exact same ADBV for all it's filters with the exception of nitrile vs silicone and even those are dead ringers for each other other than color and composition. I don't know why they look different in those particular filters but when you cut and examine they are identical.

Fully agree; FRAM has it stated in multiple places so "suddenly" someone (with zero information or data to confirm) is stating this as a bonafide fact and it is complete rubbish.


The older Xtended Guard models (97% efficiency) were listed as dual layer synthetic over cellulose. They were rated to 10k miles. Some places like Amazon have not updated their listings to reflect the current Ultra Synthetic filters (further confused by Fram still using the XG part designation). As mentioned in previous posts on this thread there are members who simply cannot "update" their "knowledge" to the current product.

Synthetic fibers catch smaller particles, have higher holding capacity AND flow better all at the same time. What is not to like?


I've never heard of this "synthetic over cellulose" before either ... FRAM Ultra oil filters have two layers of synthetic media.

I just noticed your post .... I guess this explains where the "synthetic over cellulose" came from.

901 this is an oil and filter forum this is what we talk about i personally dont think a filter that filters so great can flow so great..I know you like to use the word troll but again my friend this is what we talk about...Get it??
Some people believe what they are told i always look for opinions and answers. Next thing you will say isthat amall oil holes will flow the exact same as larger ones.. It defies everything i ever learned in grade school science. You need some sort of restriction to filter anything. Period!
Look at how good frams base plate threads look..
 
Is there any way to drill out the inlet holes without touching the ADBV ?

But they can ... due to full synthetic media. That's one primary reason it was invented. It's been mentioned a dozen times and numbers have even been given to show a filter that is high efficiency is also a high flowing filter. But again it's been mentioned over and over that engines with positive displacement oil pumps will still deliver the same oil volume through the oiling system, it will just take a few PSI more on the pump outlet to do so, and it won't make any difference to the oil pump unless it's already in pressure relief, which it won't be under normal driving conditions. All of this has been hashed over and over, even with numbers, but it seems you keep locked onto this idea that all efficient filters are restrictive to flow.

The small oil holes will flow the same as the larger ones because you have a positive displacement oil pump pushing the oil through the system. But as others have pointed out, as long as the total area of all the holes in the base plate are equal to or the same as the big main outlet hole in the center (the ID of the inlet pipe to the engine), then it doesn't matter. I'm sure they didn't get into all that in grade school.

I swear,some of you guys crack me up.
Don't you think the engineers at Fram tested all this?
Crazydude,it's time to give up worrying about flow.
If you want max flow just buy a Purolator.
And Merk, don't go drilling on inlet holes, just think about where the shavings will go.

I am glad you posted that, now we are getting somewhere. You don't understand synthetic is all. Synthetic media is so much finer it can be woven tighter to capture smaller particles, yet since it is so small it has less flow restriction. Better filtration and better flow all at the same time.

From that article (and something that should put crazyoildude's concerns to rest):

Cellulose media consists of large diameter fibers. Synthetic media consists of very thin fibers. In the diagram above, the same average pore size is used to compare cellulose media and synthetic media. There is more area for fluid flow in synthetic media than the cellulose. In addition, synthetic media is less sensitive to water than cellulose media, which tends to swell and restrict flow. Therefore, synthetic media will have lower restriction than cellulose media of the same efficiency rating.
As these media are loaded with contaminant, we see another advantage of the synthetic media increased flow area. Contaminant that plugs up 50% of the cellulose media surface area will only plug 10% of the synthetic media area. The result is much lower restriction in the synthetic media when compared to cellulose media for the same level of loading.
 
And that crazyoildude is why Fram and countless members here have told you the Ultra is one of the best flowing filters you can buy.

He is correct most of the time(99.9%) about Fram Ultra !!!
 
I was not there in person when all this "proof" about flow was happening i can't say for sure one way or the other but the one thing i can say is most oem filters don't filter as good as say the ultra.. It is obvious that the people that design new engines with millions of dollars on R&H seem to concentrate on flow over filtering... There is a reason for that.. I own a shop that rebuilds engines and im all about flow also. It's not because car companies are saving money using cheap filters as some have implied im sure of that. Now im not saying the Fram ultra is a bad filter by any means I am using 3 of them as we speak they are very well made as far as i can see without cutting them open. I can't say for sure that they don't flow well either but i am still a little uncertain about that. A few years back they said the same thing about the pure one and that filter did not flow as well as the classic i am sure. I don't want to get into that issue again but i saw that in gauges and in engine startup sound and my ear spent 35 plus years listening to engines that is all we do at my shop is engines. Am i stuck on flow?Yeah... I may not use the ultras in the winter when the oil is super thick but on the other hand i might.. As of today i saw no evidence of restriction using the ultras which is good so far. I like Wix but the ultra seems built better than the wix looking at them without cutting. I always liked the Purolater Classics/grp 7 filters when they used to be made well now i won't use them.

The Ultra flows better than a Purolator ... even with flow enhancement tears in the Purolator's media.
