changed the oil yesterday in my grandmaws 08 accord, Maxlife 5W20 and a Fram Ultra 7317, upon taking the filter out the box, which appeared to never have been open, i noticed they had some gray grainy material around the inlet holes. i wiped it off as best as i could, didnt see any at all down the center tube and the inside of the filter looked squeaky clean. I figured anything that got through would be caught by the filter. Was this most likely from the manufacturing process?

Yep, I wouldn't have used it, because you don't know where else in the filter that gray grainy material was, especially if you can't identify it better. I can't believe you used it, it should have been returned. That's why you need to open the filter box while you're in the store, whether it's sealed in a plastic wrapper or not.
Just a guess, but it may have been metal residue leftover from the machining process. Yes the filter might catch it, eventually, but in the meantime it's being pushed through the engine. Cross your fingers.

I would have PMed Jay/motorking on here and asked him his opinion-imagine Fram would have liked to see what the gray residue was (& he might have hooked you up with a few more in the process). Jay is a good guy, and I'll never refer to the orange Extra Guard by it's old acronym again!

I work for FRAM in tech service. Would have been nice to see at least a picture of what you saw. I know we are working with different coatings on tapping plates to prevent corrosion while sitting on a shelf. Not sure that is what you saw.
