I was using the Fram Ultra on my 2017 2.4 I was occasionally experiencing startup rattle. I switched back to the Hyundai filter and the rattle has completely stopped. I change every 4,500 miles and will continue to use Hyundai filters.

2.4gdi

Any synthetic 5w30 oil and any synthetic media filter changed every interval

Consider the severe service interval of 3750 miles. No brand type of oil or filter can make up for a pint of gasoline in the oil. Maybe your driving style doesn't fill the oil sump with gasoline. You can get a UOA for info and don't use Blackstone.

I used to use Ringhaver Caterpillar in Tampa, FL. to do my UOA. They only charged $15 and supplied the catch bottle.

Yeah I wonder what they do with all the extra money saved per year using a filter more than once. I mean $4 is a lot of money to be careful with on a yearly basis. Start a retirement fund?

I agree and don't really care about what the retail price of an oil filter is, especially when I like to figure out how I can get whatever it may be at a lower cost. Even at the full retail price an Ultra is not THAT expensive for what you get.

With my Hyundai GDI engine I came to figure out that running something heavier than 0w/5w-20 makes a huge difference. Also running a Fram 3593a series filter, instead of a 9688 series filter, seems to have made a difference as well.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it but on Rock Auto you can get the Fram Ultra equivalent FPS3593A for only $2.32, I am considering the purchase of several of these with my next Rock Auto order for Hyundai parts.

Super deal ... nothing can a filter like that for such a low price IMO.

I’d use caution if using a FRAM filter that isn’t the 9688 lineup. The FRAM 9688 series was updated a few years ago, IIRC in 2017 or 2018. It was updated specifically to withstand the oil pressure spikes that a lot of Hyundai engines have.

Yes the burst pressure was increased to 310psi on all 9688 series filters, the same increase in burst pressure was applied to all 3593a series filters as well so either filter is fine.

I’d be careful on that. I think only the 9688 was updated to withstand the pressure spikes. The FRAM catalog doesn’t list the 3593a for any Hyundai past the MY2000 or so.

When FRAM updated the 9688 lineup, the Extra Guard shot up in price. The 9688 is one of the most expensive Extra Guard filters. The 3593a never went up in price.

Current Walmart pricing:
PH9688 $5.78
PH3593a $3.88

Not sure if this information is more up to date than the previous precautions regarding 9688 vs. 3593a, but everything I find online confirms the burst rating is equivalent. I verified this before ordering the clearance FPS3593A from RA.

I cannot speak to why the 9688 series filters became more expensive but the 3593a series filters are quite literally the exact same filter only being one-third longer/taller. I just put an XG3593A on my Hyundai last week and compared it in size to a Hyundai OEM filter I had, both new. They are pretty much identical in every measurement other than height, the 9688 filters I have used match the OEM. I cannot speak to why the prices were increased on the 9688 but I have used all these aforementioned filters and cut many apart and I will continue to use the 3593A on my Hyundai with full confidence and probably end up saving some money along the way 💰

I have no idea where Rock Auto got the burst spec. They have listed incorrect info on other parts I’ve researched in the past.

This is thread talked about the updated 9688 filter burst capacity.

If you are worried just use something like a Royal Purple oil filter, they are rated at something like 650psi for burst strength 💜

I know, it’s not my business and it’s a forum after all. But how many of these topics are you gonna create? I swear I’ve seen at least 10 from you, haven’t decided still?

The Fram ultra is a long life filter. 5,000 miles doesn't require a long life filter.
