Fram Ultra Glue?

Opened up a XG3614 today. Can someone look at the glue around the rim? I guess it is ok, but it seems a bit sloppy to me. I am willing to use a Fram Ultra, but I just worry that the workmanship isn't there.

There is another recent post on Fram Ultras where someone had noticed some residue on them. I have also noticed that. I think it is just grease, but I don't like any kind of residue on my cereal, nor on my filters...

Its good to go. They put a little lube on them to prevent them from rusting while sitting on the shelf.

Some filters have what appears to be glue or sealer where the base and can are seamed together. That's what it looks like to me.

Jerrybob,
It is plastisol glue we use to seal the end plate. Looks like a little squeezed out. Shouldnt be a problem but if you are uncomfortable using it I would be happy to send you another couple filters for your trouble or you can return it to the place you bought it from

Last week I went to walmart in fishkill ny and picked up 2 gallons of Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w30 and 2 fram ultra xg9688 filters. When I got home I decided to change the oil in the veloster. I filled one of the filters with fresh oil and went to put the filter on when I noticed the filter was dented. So I then opened the other filter and filled it but noticed the same glue around the base plate. I wasn't sure if I wanted to use it on the veloster but I did anyways. Walmart took the other filter back and told me to go get another one. So this time when I got the new filter I decided to open the new filters to check for dents. I opened up about 15 filters only to see that all of them except to 2 had that glue on the baseplate. I used to use fram filters on everything but for a few years now been using pur1 because everyone hear thinks the fram weren't any good but I decided to try the frams again when the ultra came out. I got a xg2 filter on my f250 and so far so good. Yesterday I called the Gentleman from fram just to let him know what I saw for myself and he was very concerned and Its nice to know that a company does care and hopefully fram will get to the bottom of this issue.

Id like to keep using the ultras on both my f250 and veloster but im kinda scared that the glue will somehow get into my engines and that scares me. Ill be opening all the filter boxes from now on for sure. I was always a 3000 mile change the oil n filter kinda guy but if these filters can really go 15,000 miles then maybe ill leave them on for two changes. Because my velosters a di motor I do the 3,750 change interval called for in the book but on my 95 f250 ill do 4000 mile changes. Hopefully im not making a mistake by not changing the filters everytime .

The glue on the base plate would bet caught in the media and never go into the engine. However ... if the glue job is bad on the base plate, it's possible the filter could leak a little around the base plate crimp area. The glue there is supposed to seal that area and make it leak proof.

Well so far no leaks on the veloster or my f250 so all is good I guess.

Hi Jay, I don't mean to threadjack but I've purchased about 12 Ultras over the weekend and noticed that one XG3600 has similar glue issues with the original poster's filter. I wouldn't hesitate to use it but if you're engineers need another one to look at, I can mail it in.

And he doesn't push the Fram products like some "think" he does. The true Fram haters don't like to see any factual data from the guy who works for Fram and has the inside scoop on some things nobody here really knows.

I responded to a thread about a month or so ago about Jay's professionalism. He tried repeatedly to help a man on a Ford F150 problem thought to be Fram related (it wasn't)and was routinely abused by that forum's members because of the Fram brand. Great asset to the Fram family.

I like Feam filter.I'll use them all.Wheather you like Fram filters or not you must admit that Motorking-Jay Buckley shows that he cares about the quality of the oil filters that Fram manufactures and if there is a problem I'm sure he will look into it.Joe

Agreed.
We are lucky to have actual ambassadors from filter and oil companies here at bitog to wade through the massive amount of incorrect info and tripe routinely posted by the ignorant and ill-informed.
Add to that we've got actual professionals from the bearing industry as well as a few real tribologists, and our resident sensibility enforcer and we've got a great community that is a wealth of real and true info,if a person digs enough or asks the right questions.
The only con I can see is that now I've got an entire community of oil nerds to facilitate my oil fetish.
