Since I saw the light about K&N (and other similar filters) that they are only good for racing and allow WAY TOO much dirt into the motor on a daily driver, I made the switch back to paper.

Anyway, I have 2 vehicles and have been using Wal-Mart FRAM standard air filters. However, since one of my vehicles is a weekend 4x4, I decided to upgrade today and got a FRAM ToughGuard oiled paper filter. I figured it was the perfect filter to stop dirt & dust on a towing/off-roader versus the standard FRAM air filter that I will continue to use on my daily driver.

Sorry to any loyal K&N folks (I was one for 10yrs), but facts are facts. They have a use and definitely allow more air in for a little more power, but they are only good for limited use or in a very non-dusty environment. Paper keep the oil cleaner and will allow a motor to last longer as well as give better MPG over K&N.

I put a Tough Guard in my moms car recently. They're built somewhat better than the standard Fram, and cost a bit more. Unless it has a catastrophic failure, I see nothing wrong with them except the price.

Does the Fram TG trap more dirt than the K&M? I tossed my K&M AF when I read about how they allowed more dirt in and went to a Purolator Paper filter. I'd like to try something that can catch more dirt than a regular filter. Any suggestions on a drop in replacement that's better than the Purolator or standard Fram?

Purolator makes the upgrade PureOne (they're blue) air filters for some numbers. These cost a bit more, but are supposed to have better filtering and capacity. I'm thinking it may be on par with the upgraded Fram ToughGuard.

yeah, the Fram Tough Guard is a paper filter plus it is oiled like a K&N so it has maximum dirt stopping power

Thanks, as long as the Pure One or the Fram TG is better at stopping dirt than the K&N I can grab either one locally.

I have used the pure one filters. Can't say anything bad or good about them I guess. I'm guessing the oil may help trap a bit more fine particles, but I'm not sure how they claim extra flow or capacity.

Tough Guard sounds great. I am going to try one next time I change out my air filter. I like the idea of oiled throw away filter, not that impossible to re-oil K&N that lets too much through anyway.

Does the oiled filter stop more dirt than a standard filter, or will it end up allowing more dirt through like the K&N does? I can grab one locally but am having second thoughts. Thanks!

I am looking at one as I reply. It is definitely not like a K&N. K&N you can see through the pores, but this Tough Guard looks just like any paper filter. Even with a magnifying glas I can't see any pores, just fibers. It's advertized to "capture more dirt." Also seems well constructed.

Interesting is that the box is plastic wrapped, then when you open the box and slide the filter out, it also is plastic wrapped.

My Maxima came from the factory with an OEM oiled paper filter. I've been using the Fram Toughguard and Purolator Pure One for the last 30K miles. They're both good filters.

FWIW I've been using the lightly oiled PureOne for the last 14K miles. UOA silicon dropped 4ppm across three reports from Blackstone in a two year period during its use.

I purchased both Fram TG and Amsoil EA air filters for my next change. I'm in a little bit of a quandary on which to use next. My G/F will get the filter I don't choose.

I just added the tough gaurds to both of my vehicles. The truck had a K&N with 22,000m on it. The Envoy has 4200m on the factory filter but it looked like it had 150,000m on it.

I didn't know PureOnes were lightly oiled. Interesting. I'll have to check it out at the store. Problem is most chains are selling Fram. Think Pep Boys may still sell Purolator.

AAP sells the Purolater Oil Filters, I haven't checked if they're oiled or not.

The PureONE was my first choice, but for my application the cost was over $30.00 for the truck and they don't make it for my envoy. The Fram's were bult just as nice IMO and fit well. Plus the price was great $10.94 for the truck and $18.xx for the envoy after the mail in rebates!
