The Extra Guard filter, the orange can, is $5 less than the Ultra Guard. If you're going to do ~5,000 mi OCIs then it's worth it to use the Extra Guard oil filter. And now the Extra Guard, orange can, has a silicone ADV that makes it even a better deal.

And for $1 more you can upgrade from an ultra to a m1 at Walmart.

Thanks everyone for your help and information.

I'll try a change in procedures... I ordered a Fram UG and will keep it for 2 OCIs which will equate to about 12k miles. This is a new practice (for me) that I'll need to become comfortable with but since there are folks getting 12k miles out of a single oil change, I should be OK. As mentioned before, I've never done UOA before but will on the first few cycles of oil changes.

Too bad there isn't a more cost effective testing service around because the test will cost more than the oil change. On a 1000hp V12 Mann marine engine, that holds 30 gallons of oil, a $30 test makes a lot of sense. I buy Milesyn in 5 gallon buckets because the other cars in my household use the same grade oil. Total component cost for me is around $22...

As for the M1 at an additional cost of $1... I really, really like the stippled friction grip on the Fram filters. Even though that's an external feature, not related to filtering ability, that extra dollar is a worthwhile expense to me

Considering the M1 is not full synthetic, costs more, and some models have been showing issues, an M1 is more of a downgrade. FIFY.

Eh. I use the ultra and change it every 5-6k oci. It is literally $2.50 more than a TG at the local walmart. I waste about that amount on a gallon of gas just driving to said walmart to buy the oil/filter.

Upgrades usually do cost more but it's just a dollar. Full synthetic or synthetic blend matters why If the filter can preform as advertised for 20k? M1 has a thicker can and a built-in bypass valve. I had an iltra that showed issues.

Not when you buy the iltra Ultra in a six pack from eBay, especially when you catch one of their 15% off codes that they've had lately, then Ultras can be under $4. The Mobil 1 is pretty much only a good deal when there is a rebate combo with Mobil 1, and the "A" suffix filters are NOT as good as the previous Champ made ones. Honestly, I think the leftover Distance Plus filters were a better deal than Mobil 1s, with a tank-like structure & silicone ADBV. I don't "hate" the Mobil 1 filters, I just don't think they're worth twice as much.

Why aren't the Mobil 1 oil filters that now have an "A" suffix not as good as the previous Mobil 1 oil filters? With the Mobil rebates I pay ~ $5 or less for the Mobil 1 oil filter when I purchase the oil and filter and use the Mobil 1 rebate. I do this twice a year and accumulate a nice cheap stash of Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 oil filters.

Well that's like 120k miles of usage if you get the full time out of those ultras. Apparently you can get the m1s for $5 with their rebate.
Who's making the m1 now if not champ?
How do you know they're not as good?

Mobil 1s are still Champ in most-all applications.

I cannot find a link for Mobil 1 oil filter rebates. Do you have a link?

Apparently they do. A poster in this thread gets them for $5.
So still champ made? Must be about the same as before then huh?
