Is there any significant difference between Fram's Pro Synthetic and Ultra series? I'm looking at the FPS7317. Smooth gold-colored can, without the black grip. Listing on eBay says they are essentially the same as Ultra.

Is this just marketing? Opinions?

Looks like it is the Ultra equivalent for shops: http://www.framproseries.com/program.html.

The biggest difference appears to be the lack of the black grip material like you stated. The claimed 99% efficiency is pretty much the same as Ultra's 99%+ and the part numbers for those efficiency specs are the same with the exception of the prefixes (XG for Ultra and FPS for the Pro Synthetic).

I bought this. On the ebay ad, are links to the filter. It's essentially an Ultra without the Sure Grip. Not a chinese knockoff.

From a previous bitog post:

Hey,
I work at FRAM. The Pro series is intended to be sold to shops for professional installation on cars.
The baseline filter is orange, internally it is like the Ecore filter we make for GM and many others. 92% efficiency and 5k OCI
The white filter is a Tough Guard internally with silicone ADV, 99% efficiency and 10k OCI.
The gold filter is a FRAM Ultra inside, silicone ADV, 99% efficiency and 15K OCI.
We are puzzled as to how these ended up where they are.
The same filters are available to the public in our consumer brands. Unless your a repair shop or oil change center, it is not likely you can purchase these. If you are a shop and interested in the program, please email me at [email protected]

A shop is probably selling surplus filters.

Any way to make a buck.....

I'd prefer the plain can as my cap style filter wrench doesn't work well on the textured stuff.

But Ebay is the best place to buy a knockoff product.

Are you sure the white ones are equilelant to the Tough Guards? I only ask because they don't show the orange cans on their website when looking at the "pro Series". They also don't say anything about the ADBV on the website under the white can.

ditto. I may go for these instead of regular Ultras.

Yep. I just found out about the Pro Series after reading through some of the threads today. I don't know how I managed to miss all of the posts on this site talking about the Pro Series since 2014!?

But anyway, I can get 6 of the Pro Series from a seller on eBay for $37.50 with free shipping. Fram Ultras are usually around $9 a piece at Walmart. This will save me quite a bit of money, and I'm mad that I didn't know about this in time for my last few oil changes!

Hello, I am a newbie on a learning curve here. My question if I may ask here is I use an XG4967 filter on a couple of vehicles. I wish to maybe go to a longer filter like a XG4386. Is this unwise? I have done this on a older car for over 100,000 mi until I sold it. Does anyone know if the bypass open at the same point. I see no other differences other than being a bit longer. I called Fram and I was encouraged not to, only from a liability stand point. It would be easier to grab and hold alittle more oil. The 02 Prius goes 13,000 presently between changes. What does everyone recommend here? PS(How do you start a new topic)

Welcome .... use the "New Topic" button at top LH side of the page to start a new topic.

The 4386 size is identical in all ways to the 4967, except longer and more capacity, and is easier to change on the Prius. You aren't going to have any liability issues on an 02. Either size is OK.

Thanks, I am going to order them off of E bay.

Although i don't know if there is a difference between the two i do know personally the only fram i will use is the ultra.. Cut open a few and see for yourself.

Other than the height and actually spinning one on; they seem identical. The specs on the gasket is slightly larger on the 4386 vs the 4967 and thicker but one can't tell by just lookin.

Hey fellow Bitoggers, looked at my recent E bay order of FPS3600 and FPS4386. They look to be in pretty good shape. I ordered 6 each, but one 3600 has a bit of rust. Just a tiny bit so I will use it first thing next spring. Kind of a cool thing is the 3600 fits on my Ranger and my tractor mower and on a Sienna if my brother in law wants to. The 4386 are going on the Xb and the Prius and they will be used up in three years. Just wondering hows the condition of the other FPS's out there.
