Fram PH9837 Cut open. Ugh!

Pleat spacing (amount of media) does look too skimpy with the Fram ExtraGuard. Sure it didn't tear, but I'm wondering if the wavy fiber end caps didn't leak a little in usage. ????
This is a reason to use all-synthetic wire-backed media to be sure.

If you don't want to do an engine 5-minute flush at an oil change, add Gumout MultiSystem in the oil sump and leave it in for a month right before you change the oil.

Who said anything about anything? For $5.15 you can get this better instead of a $7.49 Wix:

Less if you wait for higher % off. Since it is about defending Wix by website prices, it should be OK to demolish that with other website prices.

Wix oil filters at Oreilley's in my neck of the woods is $6.49, and the NAPA Gold is the same price too. Can get a Wix from RockAuto for $4.00.

Before you posted this I hadn't connected the OP's pics and realized that this orange can application doesn't include an adbv. Equivalent filters from other brands include an adbv. While it may be true that the 'original' oe filter application didn't use an adbv, the ACDelco OE PF61 equivalent for this application includes an adbv.

As for the noted equivalent MGL51522, linked below* are pics of a virgin dissection of said filter posted here. The OP's possible contributing issues aside, if strictly given the choice between the two equivalents, even at similar price point, I know which filter I'd choose.

That said, the Wix equivalent Napa Gold can be had at many Napas on their semi annual sales for ~$3.60.

Earlier in the thread I said the end caps look like they are deformed. It's possible it was leaking, and if some people can't see that then they are drinking too much Fram juice.

I'm not sure you understand how oil flows through a filter. Oil is supposed to flow past the endcaps on the portion that is pictured, so I presume that is what you are referring to.

In fact on the inlet side the Fram fiber endcaps are octagonal in order to promote this flow.

The endcaps should seal at the center tube however. But since that is not pictured I didn't think that was what you meant.

+1 - not sure there is an understanding of how the seal and oil flow is accomplished. Though I do not like the Extra Guard filter (simply because there are other filters with more media), the seal on the ends of the filter is not an issue. The photo below shows how the seal is accomplished--the green circle of the bypass valve plate fits inside the red circle of the filter and the seal is made between the end cap "gasket" and the metal center tube. The same applies on the other end for the ADBV. As long as the assembly is held under pressure by the tension on the bypass valve plate, the seal is accomplished.

Wavy fiber end caps should still rest against the metal flats I guess. As long as they don't fall apart entirely, should be OK. Metal center tube provides structural support. Actually a small amount of waviness in the end cap closest to the inlet/outlet end wouldn't be bad as long as the openings were very small. Still, I prefer metal endcaps.

@2010_FX4

I was talking about whether or not the Fram was holding oil because dry start rattle is not uncommon even with new filters.

Anyway, nice pics and explanation.

This was a Fram PH9837 with Valvoline Next Gen 5w30. 2970 miles in 9 months.
Previous was same...NextGen w/ 9837. 3000 miles.
First change was NextGen with Purolator Pure One. 3000 miles.

All short trip severe service, less than 5 miles to work.

Just to clarify...since my son got this from his aunt...I (not the dealer) have changed the oil 3 times.

Each time with NextGen 5w30. The first was with a Pure One filter, the last two with the basic Fram. No issues with the first two changes....I cut apart the filter each time. This last (3rd change) BOOM...UGLY!

I am trying to figure out what happened since. Perhaps, as some have suggested, a coolant gasket went...leaking into the oil or something. Coolant level has not moved... I check it weekly...but something caused this.

I guarantee that WIX would look just as "ugly" as this Fram did.

Not a chance. You might have some wavy media but that would be it. The Fram had huge gaps in the pleats due to the lack of media and wavy end caps thanks to their use of fiber. Feel free to use this junk on your engine, I will not. The quality on them is way too inconsistent.

You guys and your bandwagon shenanigans.

Ill admit the Extra Guard isnt my top pick, but given this particular model and situation, I dont think this one looks bad at all. Have you seen the PH3600? That is loaded with media.

A while back, someone either posted (or posted a link to) a PH16 that only had 3k on it which believe it came off an older V8 durango. That I wasnt a fan of whatsoever and I will most likely never use one on my Jeep.

Thank you for proving my point, clearly the quality is inconsistent. Some look good, some look absolutely terrible. Since we have admitted that, why would someone invest time in researching what is best for their engine and then buy a substandard filter with questionable and inconsistent quality?

You admit you won't use one, but still call others out for pointing to the low quality construction of the filter.

We were talking about oil filters, and you have to make it personal. Not cool. The pictures speak for themselves, people can make their own decisions on what filter they want to use.

Hey, at least they don't tear ... while we're talking about "questionable and inconsistent quality".

It's junk too. Your point?

That filter looks terrible after 3k miles. I have had other brands that didn't look that bad after 9k (Pureone being the closest comparable model as I don't use classics.)

I would be looking for a new filter too.

But I'm sure that some here will still chock this up to Another "win" for the cardboard camp right?
