You are right, and by cutting open a filter and looking at its innards with the naked eye, you too cannot tell if the filter filtered out the damaging micron particles.

Just because a filter pleases your eye with its inside construction is ZERO indication if it is filtering properly.

Not zero indication because a 12 year old can usually see the difference between good build quality and shoddy build quality.. And like Zoo0Six says sometimes there is a big hole in the media that seems to be a certain companies trademark these days..

I don't know, my eye pleasure went south when I saw this Purolator made oil filter:

I would never buy even the new repainted Purolators coming out with this style of adbv. Which they do still have. The design was OK and they work OK, but the human putting the valve on the neck on this one must have been looking at the clock while doing it. So, how do I know the same clock watcher, or whatever happened, isn't still putting adbv valves on? I don't know so I won't be buying their product in my lifetime. This particular defective filters adbv was pressed hard and crooked like shown on the neck, had to pull pretty hard to get it off. No, I did not cause or do it. The filter was in line to go on daughters Camry with a somewhat pointing down oil filter. Thankfully I cut it open. Bye bye Purolator for me.
They do have a different style adbv on the round inlet hole filters they make. Still, no more soup for me.
