Fram PH 3600 at 5,000 miles. Torn pleats

Yep, extremely wide pleat spacing at the seam pleat/crimp area = pleat tear. Adding more media with more pleats, likely no tear. And, can even happen with fiber endcaps.

Thanks for c&p.

Fram ultra's for life, as long as the adbv doesn't get into my engine like that one dude's mazda.

Very wide pleat spacing and long pleats is a recipe for media tearing on any oil filter. I think this is the first Fram with torn media like that I've seen posted here in a very long time. Typically the pleats will bend quite a bit, but not tear ... but not on this one.

Send this thread to Fram so the production guys can get their act together.
This appears to be happening to most all of the fiber glass and paper media filters. What has changed? E10 Fuel. Oil Formulation packages. Lower viscosity oil. 40%-65% smaller filter area.
Maybe that's why Champ went to Short pleats and a large diameter center tube. But then even LESS media surface area.

What's a boy to do if he can't get a Toyo Roki spin on ?

Cheap ain’t good and good ain’t cheap. If you insist on FRAM, use the Tough Guard or Ultra Guard. I refuse to use an Orange Can.

I love the orange can!

My theory on that failure was the guts of the filter were loose - it was either mis-manufactured or it possible got dropped hatd and loosened the leaf spring.

Loose guts on any oil filter could result in the same failure. That's why I always inspect and shake a new filter to ensure nothing is loose inside it before using the filter.

By far the biggest gaps I've ever seen on a PH3600. I've used and cut quite a few of them, they used to be one of the better orange cans.

I just picked up one of these from Ace Hardware (needed it to get over a discount code threshhold), now I'm wondering if I should cut it & not use it? Hopefully bad pleat spacing can be seen through the center tube holes(?)

Great photos. May I ask what went back in and on? Thank You my friend 🇺🇸🇨🇦🍻👍

Thanks! **** cell phone takes better pics than my $1,000 digital SLR.

The same filter went back on but will be the last one. Oil was again QS Full Synthetic 5W-30.

I'll probably start using Napa Gold filters on the vehicles that get spin on filters and Mopar filters on the Pentastar engines.

Most jobber filters look like that. I have cut open a few 3 dollar Federated Hastings with many pleats wider than 45 degrees. MFG save money with using less media, then you will have uneven gathering usually near the seam. We have seen this for ages.

I would just use it.
There is nothing to show yet there is a pattern of issues.
Maybe if you had the same date code I would be a little more worried, but I would still use it.

Yeah, I had hoped a Fram EG would be better than a Federated Premium Guard, but First Brands seems to be losing it lately.
