Is the poppet leaking light, or is light shining through the material? I could never get any light leakage on the black nylon Fram poppet valves. Is it visually fully closed/seated?

No comment on the filter….but you’ve piqued my interest running a 5w30 oil. Why? It’s spec’d for a 5w40 which would be better for a “severe oil burner”. If anything try a synthetic 15w40 weight, euro if possible, and run it hard for a couple quick oil changes to see if cleaning the rings makes any improvement 🤷

It's Valvoline Restore & Protect (use goal in this case to clean rings ?) which doesn't come in any xW-40 grade.

Just taking a shot in the dark with R&P. 15w40 on deck for top off.

It’s harder to do with two hands but can you apply some pressure to the ends of the spring and shine the light and take a picture?

Sorry just dropped off the filter and used oil at the transfer station. I did try to wiggle the leaf spring prior and it was firmly in the end cap.

I don't see any light leak between the leaf spring and end cap. It looks like the light is coming through the bypass popped. Not sure what the light is showing in the photo. Was it just making the light colored popped valve "glow"?

There needs to be a BITOG C&P rule that people can't throw away a C&P for a week so questions can be addressed. 😄 ;)

Absolutely no gaps or light leakage. Simply light shining through the plastic.

I normally keep my filters/used oil around for a while. Transfer station was open and it happened to be convenient today.

That's what I figured. I think the Fram nylon material style bypass valve seals pretty well. Probably better than some metal-to-metal bypass valve designs.

Just for info, I went to amazon and got an xg2 for $4.50 including tax with subscription. Instead of cutting my used ultra on the car now, it’s worth $4.50 to not deal with the oil.

Food for though, not all will be agreed with. May be simplistic. The interesting part is the circulations.

They forgot to show the flow paths of the leaks. 😄

Decent overall 11 year old video on filters, but what they say about the relationship between efficiency and holding capacity isn't always true. Very possible (because they do exist) to have both high efficiency and high holding capacity. The easiest way to do that is to increase the total media surface area along with high efficiency media itself.
