I'm gonna do an oil change for my mom's 2002 Rav4 tomorrow. It currently has 52,500 miles on it. I was at WalMart, so I decided to buy some Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and a FRAM Extreme Guard oil filter.

This setup should last 7,000 miles, right? It's a fully synthetic oil and the FRAM filter is rated for 7,000 miles.

Also, are there any opinions about this particular model FRAM oil filter? It's expensive ($10), but I bought it cause I was already there and I wanted a filter that could lasts the 7,000 miles that the synthetic oil lasts.

Thanks.

Personally, I wouldn't use a FRAM filter, they are cheaply made.

If you want a quality filter,go with one like: Amsoil, K&N, or Mobil 1.

Definately get a filter with a bypass valve, so in cold starts or if it clogs you wont bugger your engine. Order a Wix. Then swap out the fram.

I read some more threads on the forums, and it seems people are really against the FRAM (or maybe they're really against Walmart who pretty much only sells FRAM). Maybe it'll be worth the time and gas to go return the FRAM filter I bought and buy a NAPA gold.

You mean Extended Guard, right? That one is their top-of-the-line model. Most Fram bashing here is aimed at the regular orange can. The Extended Guard seems to be decent, just a bit expensive.

What I really want is a decent 7,000 miles oil filter. The Extended Guard is $10, and I don't want to spend that much money on a filter for every oil change I do. The NAPA Gold is under $7. I know it's made by Wix, which everybody likes. But is this filter rated for 7,000 miles?

THe XG is a good filter. It has synthetic media in it. It is a little pricey, but it's your mom eh? It's a good choice.

personally, I would use a high flowing filter, fram is a good filter. the guys that are on here think that because of the frams construction it is bad. they have been doing business for yrs. do we see them out because they have to replace engines? I have no idea what they are putting in the oil that they have to use a high end filter to filter it out but I dont ever put anything in my oil so I really dont even need a filter. I would recommend anything cheap. fram works, but so does wix or recommended dealer filters.

Bob is right. A Fram will get the job done. But given that there are arguably better constructed filters that are readily available, I don't see a compelling reason to choose a Fram over a Purolator, Wix, or Champion.

IMO, I'd go with a SuperTech filter (made by Champion) over a Fram.

bob or g-man, would you consider the motorcraft fl820s a good or excellent flowing filter?

I don't have any data upon which to make an informed opinion. But just from a design standpoint, the E-Core SuperTech filters should be the most free flowing OTC filters currently available.

Having watched Fram filter production on television, it is solidly constructed.

In that there is consistancy filter to filter, gluing of all the parts seems more than adequate, etc. Its practically all machine assembled. A lot of people have an issue with the cardboard endcaps, but really, whats the problem with that? Oil came in cardboard cans for years. =-)

One other point about bypass. Either its in the engine (ie sbc), or its in the filter (ie sbf). Reality is for a sbc a filter is bypassed 99% of the time anyway--Thats not to say no oil flows through the filter, but it certainly is not full flow, or the primary oil path from the pump to the engine. Really, a basic filter (wether thats a fram or other inexpensive choice)is not going to fail under normal circumstances, or suddenly not filter after some imaginary mileage number is reached.

Like finding favored oils, try different filters. Don't notice any oil pressure differences? Noises? Then don't worry about filter brand. My Ford makes the same noises wether it has a Napa Gold, Silver, Fram, AC Delco, Quaker State or Fram filter on it. Oil pressure also happens to be the same. Same goes for my Chevy's. Based on that I'm not going to spend inordinate amounts of money on some synthetic media filter. Certainly, I have a pecking order of filters, but I'm not spending 8.99 on an AC Delco filter when I can get the Fram for 4.99. And I sure ain't spending $12.99+ for one of those synthetic media filters since I see no return on investment doing so. If my engine is so dirty its going to plug up a Fram filter, it is also going to plug up a fancy high-zoot filter.

Alex.
I feel like the dissenter in the group with my continued Valvoline AC and Fram use.

I agree with Bob (founding member) above. I drove a '76 VW "beetle" for 200,000 miles until the floor rotted out and the engine ran perfect.**It had no oil filter** !!

I use the Napa "silver" cheap filters on my vehicles and have no problem. I think an empty can with an old wool sock in it would filter well enough for the Corolla and Accord.

A large majority here rate the NAPA for better than 7K. Even the $2.28 or-so Supertech can be run for 7K.

Has anybody noticed on the Fram Extra Guard box, the end caps are metal ??

I'm sure Fram got tired of answering 1000000 emails every week from various people asking about the cardboard construction.

Return the extended guard and get the SuperTech or regular Orange Can.

I highly doubt your engine will last longer if you used the higher quality filter.

"A lot of people have an issue with the cardboard endcaps, but really, whats the problem with that? Oil came in cardboard cans for years. =-) "
AND at least one other brand of oil filter(a highly rated one) also uses cardboard end caps.
Besides guys, the filter media in most standard filters is PAPER.

I no longer use the orange can, but it's because of the shortage of filter media; not the cardboard end caps.
