A couple questions from a Newbie:

Do these Fram High Mileage filters really do anything? Will they help condition seals or reduce oil consumption? I have an 02 Civic that is using oil.

How long can you run them? Fram doesn't specify unlike their other filters.

Thanks!

Don't waste your money... try using a thicker oil first, like a high mileage 5 or 10w30... might help, but certainly won't hurt. The filter will do nothing...

You're wasting your money on those high mileage FRAM filters.

Stick with the standard OCOD and a premium motor oil and call it good.

Thanks guys. Currently using a Fram Ultra (2 OCI) and Maxlife. Changing the filter is a PITA on this car.

I do have to say fram is my favorite brand of filter. Have one on both my vehicles right now. You could even do one filter over two changes if you purchased a fram that was rated for a higher mileage oil change interval. a few have done that on the forum.

I'd say stick with the FU at 2 OCI. And I also agree with you on the filter being a PITA to change on the Civic!!

You need to find out if the oil consumption is due to rings or seals. If the seals, are they hard or worn ...

HM oils can help with a hard seal; they can condition them to some degree.

Worn seals can at times benefit from slightly thicker oil.

However, at some point, neither of those conditions can be overcome with trickery and replacement is the oil solution.

I went through this with my daughter's 2000 2.4L Galant. After lots of investigation, the valve stem seals had to be replaced. After that, the engine was as oil-tight as the day it came off the assembly line.

PoohBah,
Most here know I work at FRAM. Let me explain what the HM filter and is not. It's delivery system is a direct offshoot of a filtering system we developed for class 8 trucking fleets when they started experiencing shortened drain intervals due to soot agglomeration in the engine oil due to the addition of EGR systems to large diesels. We decided to sell it in the Pass car market when many oil companies started pushing HM oils. What the additives does is keep acid balance (PH) in check on engines that have some piston ring blow by. It also contains seal conditioning additives as well. Otherwise it is identical to the standard Extra Guard filter. If you have a clean well maintained engine that is not using oil, you should use the EG or XG filter. If you have an oil burner/leaker, there is a benefit. These filter will go 5K OCI. OK, let the trash talking begin and Happy New Year to all the BITOGers out there/

'OK, let the trash talking begin'.Not sure what that's supposed mean. Would posting a difference of opinion or different take be trash talking.

As for the topic'd HM filter, based on previous reports and posts the gel basket additive is based on controlling TAN which would be PH balance mentioned. First I've read of the seal conditioner angle and there's no mention of it on the website specific HM information.

And I see the HM promotion mentioned most with comparative reference to diesel trucking which normally do extended ocis. As noted, the HM is otherwise an orange can recommended to ~5k miles. So it's use seems to be somewhat incongruous and limited 'to me'.

If seals and minor leakage is a consideration, 'my advice' would be to use an HM oil like MaxLife or others and let oil companies pick the additives which is their primary business. Then choose the filter of your choice to match the oci/fci. If it's an orange can, you will be saving yourself the $2-2.50 HM price premium.

There was once another filter made to take advantage of a trend too, but that's another topic and could be considered trash talking.

So attempted to keep it factual, on topic, and stay classy.
