Fram filter with grip

How do you install a fram filter with the grip? Can you use your hand or do you still need to tighten with a wrench?

I do hand tight with all my filters that are spin-on. The grip is supposed to help in that endeavor.

I've always hand-tightened mine. I don't know that I've ever used a wrench to tighten it down.

I too only hand tighten all my spin on filters. In about 45 years there's never been a problem with leaks.

Hand tighten with a shop towel in hand. Works every time. If you tighten with a wrench you run the risk of the gasket remaining on the engine at the next change.

Never use a wrench to tightenan oil filter unless you can't get a good grip, even then be careful. I've never tightened an oil filter with a wrench on any vehicle in almost 50 years. Just snug it up good-n-tight by hand. That's all it needs.

Just hand tighten your filters. Even when you hand tighten them they always require a wrench to get them loose.

Exactly ! That's the reason they put that coating there.

I mean seriously, it's graphically represented on the side of most filters.

Even when you try, you can't get much beyond 3/4 turn.

Yup, never use a wrench to install a canister filter.
As said, 1/2 to 3/4 turn after gasket touching is what the spec is for most vehicles.

The Fram coating is to help with removal.

Clean filter mount, lube filter gasket with new oil and then tighten 2/3 to 3/4 turn by hand after initial gasket contact. Works every time.

I've always given any spin-on oil filter a small little tighten with a oil filter wrench. By small I mean about 1" tighter. Never had a problem with loose, leaking, won't come off or gasket sticking. I've had numerous new car oil filters that I destroyed getting them off.

I tighten all filter makes by hand. They don't leak. Imagine that I'm 77. I don't need to bust a gut to get them off!

That is exactly what I do. Just a small nudge with the filter wrench. I have seen too many leaking filters because the were only hand tight and I don't need that in my life.
