I noticed at Autozone today that new stock of the Fram air filters no longer includes the thread of orange colored "Triad" strands in the media which Fram used to claim made their filters superior. Now the Fram air filters seems to have a white paper filter media without the Triad fibers and the box design no longer makes any mention of these special fibers either.

Was Triad just a marketing gimmick, or was their something superior about it?

Triad is the name of a type of organized crime organization in Southern China. They claimed that Fram using the term besmirched their name and sued Fram to stop them from using it.

Seems like Fram still advertises it on their website. You may have seen some of Frams old stock or something. Because I just purchased an air filter for my ranger at Advance Auto parts here in Georgia and my box says Triad technology.

It looked good, but it apears the triad fibers were the few and far in between orage fibers and not the typical paper that made up the rest of the filter.

The triad was never available in my application. My filter, in Fram, has been the red paper one, that is made in Korea, and identical to the Wix product. I still see plenty of the triad stuff on the shelves, but not for every application.

Fram filters for my application (Chrysler-Mitsu 3.0 V-6) come in either fuzzy or non-fuzzy, depending on which Fram box you randomly pick. Perhaps it's possible that Fram outsources or subcontracts so many air filters that they couldn't even guarantee that a majority of their filters would have the Triad media, and therefore it became a meaningless, hit-and-miss marketing feature that many part #s wouldn't even have...?

I think Triad was/could have been better. It appears like Fram implemeted a version of a tri-lobal designed spinnerete to increase surface area of the fiber/gram of material. This type of spinnerete manipulation is quite common for varried purposes. For example, in the carpet industry the trilobal design is used to give the carpet piles more shine, basically more surfaces to reflect light from. I think the idea has real merit if enough of the fiber is implemented in the design.
