It's small but it looks on the back bumper the paint isn't wrapped around the one corner. Should I call about this ASAP or just wait for my 3 month appointment?

I would think that the sooner you bring it in the less likely they'll be able to cause it a chip or acid rain damage or some other such thing that might not be covered by warranty. From here it kinda looks like the paint if lifting. Is it lifting?

I wouldn't wait get the dealer to enter this issue into the internal RO system so it is on the record officially, no excuse for peeling paint on a virtually brand new vehicle. It will likely only get worse from here.

I will say that it might be better to monitor it before they try and get you to repaint it . Since on the whole a factory paint job even this one will with this small area probably last longer than the respray.

Hard to explain really, but it looks maybe like the stress when first putting the bumper on made it that way. You just see the plastic bumper under the paint.

Any idea on what they'll do? Replace/ repAint the bumper? I inspected the test of the car. No issues. It's just where the little fold comes in here. Perhaps when it was clipped in place?

The dealer will most likely repaint the whole bumper or they may try and just touch up the spot if they're cheap. Has it gotten larger, does the area around it look like it can be peeled. If you try to peel it with you finger nail does it peel? What is the paint warranty?

If it does get it repainted get a written warranty for the duratation of full warranty of the car. If not just use touch up paint on that area yourself but still ask for the paint warranty for the bumber paint to last for the duration of the full warranty of the car. Total repaint of factory paint does not seem to hold up as well, it's a new car!

It's obviously NOT a color matched plastic injection bumper, some VWs in the past like my old 96 Golf had the color literally as part of the plastic resin, while yours is a painted surface.

My personal suggestion is to have the dealer note the issue, BUT if possible tell them that as long as it does not increase in size you'd prefer to just touch it up for now. They will give you free touch up paint and also ask for a bottle of "clear top coat" touch up as well.

Touch it up and monitor it to make sure that the peel does NOT spread, (very important to touch it up!)

If no progression of peeling occurs over the next 6 months I would not bother having it resprayed as the factory paint will generally ALWAYS be a better overall quality and longevity.

If you see the spot continue to peel in a significant way obviously it must be refinished.

Bottom line, try to keep the factory paint job if possible. BUT make sure to get the issue noted internally at the dealer so in the event the issue becomes much worse they will respray before the warranty runs out.

Okay. That sounds like the best suggestion. It's very very small. So for now I'd rather have them just document everything and touch it up myself. At this point I'd rather keep the factory paint then to see them repaint it.

I would make them touch it up. ANY follow up warranty problems will be more difficult if you do the work. Trust me. Under warranty you want everything documented and you want them to be responsible for any mishaps later on.

While a tiny touch up might not make a difference, the paint formula used on flexible plastic is different than what is used on metal.

Very good points DIM. I agree, Have the dealer do the touch up job, and make sure they use BOTH the base coat white and the clear coat on top.
It is VERY important that the touch up job seals the surface so that no water or other liquids can get underneath the surrounding paint and lift it off as well.

Yep, if the dealer does the job and there is any issue it helps IMO to get the most mileage out of the warranty.

Have the dealer document that THEY did the touch up job as well.

It may not even be "factory" paint. I'll bet that the bumper on this particular car was damaged after assembly and was replaced or re-sprayed after the car left the factory. This sort of thing happens all the time. It may have been damaged in transport, at any of the various storage lots, etc. There's no way that would have passed visual inspection at the factory. I'm surprised it passed dealer prep, unless the dealer was the one who repaired it. The panels do look misaligned, furthering my opinion that the bumper cover has been removed and/or replaced.

Looks like it was damaged on assembly, maybe didn't actually peel until transport. Just report it to the dealer before they have a chance to say you hit something. I'm sure they will do the right thing and bill the factory.

When I first washed my Grand Cherokee I noticed that the rear passenger door had a corner that didn't quite match and had some sanding marks (as an ex-body guy, I notice things most don't).

I showed it to the dealer, they had a hard time seeing it until the body guy came out. Told me to just let them know when I could leave it.

They told me they sometimes had damage from the transport companies, and repaired them and billed the transport company. Apparently the transport company decided to repair this damage somewhere else and not get billed for dealer repairs.

Note that my relationship with the dealer is a lot more open than most. They buy $15,000 worth of oil from me each month and I teach all their mechanics in regular courses and travel with their factory reps to teach people.

It's a VW, the panels are supposed to mis-aligned.... I kid, I kid...

On a more serious note, it does look like their was some damage done before, possibly during transport as other's have said. Did the dealer disclose any information about any body work done?

Thanks for all the replies. I emailed the sales girl who sold me the car (who was fantastic by the way). This dealership is an hour away but based on feedback online, they are a really great dealership. Hopefully they give me a response today.

Just another picture so you can get an idea of the size of the area with the issue. Hopefully a touch up with documentation works out. I'm okay with it, I've learned to get over dings and scratches but this is a new vehicle and I don't want them to deny anything if it worsens a couple years down the road.

A vehicle this new, take it right to the dealer....you want it 'documented, b/c if piles of people are coming in with complaints like these, they may fix it faster.
