Your car has "three month appointment"? Hehe.. The things I don't get to enjoy driving hoopties.

I would just wait until your "check up".

that small? what is it, like 3mm?

I would not trust the dealer to fix this. here's what could happen:
a. a flunky w/ a touch up bottle will fix it.
b. an independent touch up guy will fix it (dealers pay these guys per job to pretty up the used cars).
c. the body shop will remove the whole bumper and repaint (I seriously doubt it)

because of where it is, if you fussed them about it, they would have to remove the bumper. do you really want them doing that?

since it's plastic, rust is not a concern, so I would tape off the other side and just dab some touch up on there myself.

but since I don't have OCD like some of you seem to have, I'd probably leave it alone.

I'm sort of in the same state of mind as you. I used to be OCD but anymore I just accept what comes with a daily driver when it comes to cosmetics.

I've seen dealerships rip off bumpers and panels, breaking of clips and what not. The issue may be resolved but then you notice interior pieces or panels not fitting like it did from the factory.

Even a small piece of white electrical tape to seal that spot would be okay with me. My only concerns are that it doesnt get worse and that it's documented by the dealer.

Thanks for the reply.

That doesn't look too bad when it isn't zoomed in 300x.

That being said, I bought a new '05 G35 that had some minor paintwork done to it before delivery. I didn't notice for a couple days, but it stood out in different lighting, and once I noticed it I couldn't ignore it. The dealer didn't want to do anything about it intially (I had put 1,200 miles on it in less than a week), but ultimately they ended up taking it back and getting me a different car, the '06 that I have now.

Luckily I had a good relationship with the dealer and was open with them when I traded in my 9 month old '05 Tundra that I was getting rid of it because of bad paintwork on one panel that I just could not live with. They commented that if I had not told them about the paintwork they never would have found it. So they knew how picky I was ahead of time. Ultimately they took care of me and if I buy another (4th?) Infiniti, it will be from them.

Although I have a feeling my days of buying new cars are over. Kids change priorities and suck up a lot of money.

Did they take the car back because they couldn't fix the issue or because you requested for a different vehicle? I don't hope that happens but interested to see what they do.

I'm going to the original dealer I bought it from (almost an hour away). They said they might not do anything that day, just determine how they need to go about fixing it.

the paint formula used on flexible plastic is different than what is used on metal.

Not any more. The days of adding flex agent are long gone when modern urethanes came in.
You do however need an adhesion promoter for plastic max 30 min before applying the primer or it (any type of paint) will peel.

Its a new car this is what the warranty is for. Drop it off, tell them to fix it, and pick up a loaner.

Took the car in and the service manager took a look at it. He was nice. He basically said since its brand new and has less than 1000 miles we should just repaint the entire bumper. He said if they were to band aid the fix and something comes back up 30-40k down the road that VW might not okay it right away.

So we ll see how it turns out.

When you get it back, if you're happy with it, take a few pictures from different angles. Mail or email yourself a copy of those pictures. A year from now you'll be able to compare those to how it looks at that time. Hopefully it still looks just as good and perfect..

Id definitely want it documented ASAP by the dealer, with pictures in the record.

Im not sure Id want it fixed, rather touched up, because it is really in a hidden spot, and only sticks out because it is black on white.

I think a touch up would better maintain the paint job integrity, no need to harm the rest of the factory paint job...

But having it documented is important in case issues arise later there or elsewhere...

I really have to agree. The service manager will follow up tomorrow. I think I should just tell him just what you said JHZR2. The thought of them ripping that bumper off, others taking the car from different places, and a couple days with a loaner I'll have to return... I think your method makes more sense all around.

I don't honestly see this gettig worse. But I could imagine after they repaint it I'll find more issues later.

Well I got the car back and overall I'm pretty content with the results. If I look very far back in and around where the issue it looks like there's a small part that still shows the bumper. At this point though I am not worrying. The part is fixed up and everything is documented if something happens down the road. Now I can start enjoying the car again. It feels good to get out of the Passat rental I had!

And they gave it a good wash.

It was damaged at the factory while installing.

I've seen it happen on the line plenty of times before we started taping the edges for protection. We would change the whole part out at the plant before shipping to the customer. Guess VW doesn't do this or it was missed. Better to be touched up then repaint the whole part.

Good luck with that Tiguan...I know 2 people with them with plenty of problems like compressor gone at 40k miles, 3 alternators and electrical issues.

Thanks. I've heard so many things bad about VW before getting one. But most friends that own VW's have had good luck and loved them. I short trip my daughter to day care and go to work with this vehicle everyday. It's nice having a car that's practical and still a joy to drive.

2009 Tigs had issues from what I've read but a lot has been sorted out since then it seems. Being my first turbo VW I also picked up the extended warranty (first ever when buying a car) for 6 years, 85k. Seems like a old investment nd also helps resale value if I plan on selling before the 6 years is up.

Looks like they did a decent job, I think that the damage occurred at the port, likely there was damage and the port had their cheesy shop repair it. VW is usually excellent at presenting a very high quality paint finish, as good as many luxury brands.

I've owned a couple of VWs 1984 Rabbit GTI (stolen in 95 with 115k mi on it) and my current VW that replaced the Rabbit GTI, 1996 Golf GL 2L. with 115k on it now. Both vehicles were reasonably maintained never fussed with only the required maintenance and both were bulletproof and good the drive, the Rabbit was really fun and simple, the current MKIII Golf is more mature but still nice to drive. Neither has had any problems other than general maintenance, as a matter of fact my two VWs have been more reliable and less trouble prone than either of my Hondas with similar mileage on them.

I'm going to be buying a new 2012 Golf TDI soon.

The Golf has got to be the best value of any car in its class.

You are correct - the 2 people I know have 2009's...the new one's like yours are proving to be nice reliable vehicles. I like them, they look good and have a nice interior.
