I have a coupon for $7.00 off a case of Formula Shell at B-J's Warehouse. I have been using Valvoline, Napa and Carquest conventional for a very long time now but am curious about this Formula Shell. I did a search and didn't really find much info, other than a few guys said it was OK and many others said it was really the low-end redheaded stepchild of the SOPUS oils and it's not very good.

I can buy a case of Formula Shell 10W30 for $1.35 per quart with this coupon. That's a great deal, but before I buy I really need to know if this is a good enough oil or not? How would it compare to the Napa/CQ store brands? Does anyone have any problems using or burning Formula Shell more than any other brands?

I change my oil every 3000 miles and use Napa Proselect or Carquest Red filters. At the coupon price I can change my oil for about 8 bucks, which is a great deal for me, considering Valvoline is 4 or 5 bucks a quart (3.50/qt if I want to fight the Walmart crowds) and Napa brand is about 3.50 to 3.70/qt.

Please forgive this probably redundant question. Like I said I searched but did not really find much info to support a switch from the Napa/CQ oil.

Do not be concerned, Formula Shell is a very good oil that exceeds all the specs out there. Me personally, I would use it before the brands you have been using. That is a good price and I would take advantage of it.
 
Send me the coupon. $1.35 oil from a major label will do just fine in the extended fleet. I liked the older formula (black bottle) at $0.85 on sale ..and would surely buy a good supply of the newer evolution @ $1.35.

Stock up.
 
Thanks for the info. The coupon is good from now thru July 17th. I plan on buying at least 3 or 4 cases.

I will still use the Napa and CQ filters though, they work fine for my 3000 mile OCI and are my favorite filter in the $3.00 price range.

3000 mile OCI? FS would be great for that. It's only downfall to the Quaker State and Pennzoil Conventional is TBN retention, which I think in the last UOA was low by about 5-6000 miles. Of course, your mileage may vary but I wouldn't hesitate to use it in that short an OCI.
 
It good enough for manufacturers to ship it as factory fill in cars with up to 10,000 mile oil change intervals.

PS Jimmy did you use to live in North Alabama?

It will be in mine too, soon as I can get to the B-J's Warehouse to buy it. I'd like to get 2 or 3 cases of the FS for my truck now, but I will still wait for a good sale on Napa or CQ filters. I have 2 filters left in my stash so I can wait until November or December if I need to.

No, I have never lived in Alabama. I was raised in Georgia and have lived here in Florida since 1991.

Thanks everybody for all the info here. I agree the FS should be a great oil, especially at $1.35 a quart.
 
go to the" USED OIL ANALYSIS - Gasoline " on this site and you'll see the SEARCH with the gold arrow next to it and click . Then click on ADVANCED . Scroll down in box with THREADS and click on Used Oil Analysis - Gas , then put SHELL in KEYWORD SEARCH TERMS , and then in DATE RANGE use NEWER than box and put 4 years ( or less or more ). Good Luck

This thread gives me the chance to ask a question about Formula Shell. My favorite garage recently switched to Formula Shell from Pennzoil. I have a 2008 Grand Marquis LS that requires 5w20. Most of the product data sheets I have read - for Pennzoil, Mobil and so on - state that their 5w20 meets Ford specification WSS-M2C930-A. However, Formula Shell's does not. I believe I'll be safe using Shell, because I practice a 3000 mile OCI, due to largely urban driving. Would the rest of you agree with that assumption?

Well there may be a problem here but not with the FS. A guy just posted in the Rebates and Promotions forum that he went to BJ's with the coupon but they had jacked the regular price on the case of FS from the regular price of $23.00 up to $29.00.

I can't see how a store would do something so underhanded like that. If anyone gets to the BJ's store and buys the oil please post and let us know what their price was.

If they did jack the price up to offset the coupon, that is just plain wrong. I may still use FS oil but I will buy it somewhere else.
 
A couple of weeks ago, when I had the first oil change done on my new 02 Dakota, I looked at my oil stash, considered the somewhat grungy underside of the Dakota's oil fill cap- and chose Formula Shell 10w30. Now, you might not want to run it for 10,000 miles- but for a 3-5K mi OCI it does just fine. And like many others here, I'd choose it in a heartbeat over any store-brand conventional oil I can think of. The Dakota's running now on 4 qts Formula Shell 10w30, 4 oz Lube Control, & an old Wix-made house brand oil filter.

Several years ago, on this forum, FS had a reputation as a really good cheap conventional oil, that cleaned better than most. That's why I used it for my first change. "Cleans better than most" may or may not be true- but it is most certainly a very good cheap conventional oil, & will clean as well as any I can think of!

I'd say, if you can get a good deal on it, buy a case or two or more, *Especially* for 3K OCIs. I plan on sticking close to 3K myself for my Dakota- the relatively small oil capacity for the displacement(3.9 L, 4 qts total incl/filter) is a strong influence for me.

They also have the Shell Full Synthetic which is 17.99 before tax for 6 quarts About $3/quart for a synthetic after the coupon. I now have Four 6 quart cases of this stuff sitting in my garage purchased with BJs coupons.
 
The BJs I went to had the dino at $29 a 12 quart case (up $5) but the full synthetic was still 24.99 less the $7 coupon for 6 quarts. Synthetic price was unchanged
