Formula Shell vs Exxon Superflo vs Citgo Superguard

One more question - How would you rank the following conventional oils: Formula Shell, Exxon Superflo, Citgo Superguard? By the way, Pepboys has Formula Shell after mail-in rebate for $.79. However, it is SL, not SM.

I wouldn't presume to rank them, but I've used all three at one time or another with no problem whatsoever. I would first ask...what engine will you be using it in and what kind of driving is involved. An SL oil would be just fine unless the vehicle involved is brand new, then I would use SM/GF4. The biggest knock against any of these is continuing availability. In my area it's hard to find the Exxon, while others say it's impossible to find the Citgo.

All are "serviceable" oils. I just don't feel they are in the same league with Pennzoil, Castrol, Havoline and Motorcraft.

Hmmm,... Forumula Shell is SOPUS' "value line" of motor oils, and the Pep Boys 79 cent rebate deal is on unsold "SL" stock. Someone on another thread indicated Chevron Supreme, "SM" no less, is available after rebate for 49 cents. No contest. (Chevron Oil Company doesn't make a "value line" pf motor oils.)

I doubt that the Shell Oil Company considers it's Formula Shell as anything other than a premium dino. Regardless of whether or not Formula Shell is as good as either of the Sopus brands, Shell Oil is the parent Company that bought out the merged Quaker State and Pennzoil Companies.

I believe Johnny, our SOPUS guy on this board, described FormulaShell as their "economy" line. I believe that the Pennzoil and Quaker State Euro lines are getting the Shell Helix formulations....maybe there is an econo Helix formula too.

All of these oils can be purchased for a $1 on sale somewhere.

I prefer Exxon Superflo over the other two.Shell's ok in frequent oil changes, but Citgo has a tendency to "gum up" in cold weather/4 cyl. engines that see 5k oil changes. (Yeah I know that's pretty specific failure problems but why risk it in any engine?)

There are bottles identified as "SL" but they also say "GF-4" on them. These are the only bottles of Formula Shell I've seen at Pep Boys. I've got cases of both 5W30 and 10W30 GF-4/SL Formula Shell that I got for about 70cents/quart after rebate from Pep Boys in April.

By the way,Costco has the GF-4/SM Formula Shell for $12.99/case.

Please define "gum up", and tell us what engine and which Citgo were you using? (what weight?) BTW, how cold does it get in North Carolina?

10W30, 91 Sentra 1.8 and 93 Chevy 2.2, and I think the weather in NC during cold winter months hovers around 30 dgs, I'm not sure haven't been there long enough. However, in NJ where these cars were driven daily the weather hit below zero frequently in Dec/Jan.

Am I missing something here?? I look at the GF-4 specs on PZ-CS-HV-Phillips 66-Shell and so on. I do not see Castrol GTX specs being as good as Havoline or Phillips....the same for PZ....the GF4 PZ specs aren't as good as the old ones...alot of people on this site say the Havoline is as good as PZ.....well I'd say its better.....
