Article also mentions the crosshatched material is used to soak in oil so the pistons are always lubricated and also maintained a "like new" crosshatch in there 250,000 mile durability test !

I can still see nice original, like new looking crosshatch after 250k in my MB diesels. Is this such a big thing?

Better ways to make things certainly are, but low-wear engines have been around for a long time, if the design is right...
 
We all heard GM touting the Vega engine cylinder bore process as the best thing since sliced bread and BMW nikasil being even better.I hope it works as they think it will but on the other hand it could be a major fiasco once the cars age and suffer from neglect.
I wont be on the list of buyers for this technology for at least 5 yrs after or the liners are back in.

Isn't this similar to, but not the same as, chrome flashing of aluminum and soft steel cylinders.

I had a Vega in college and the only problem I had was keeping the carbuerator working. No real oil problems; it did use some oil between changes, but at $0.49 a quart, who cared. Started every morning no matter how cold (when the carb was working).
