Hi and sorry if this topic has already been discussed but i did try a search and found no answers, I have a 96 ford ranger with the 2.3 lima engine its an all iron engine. owners manual calls for 5w30 oil and thats what i have in there now. previously i have run 0w30 amsoil and it seemed to work great but i went to mobils web site and they recommended their 5w20 i know a lot of the new fords run that weight but is that good in mine as well? I would like to hear if anyone has had a good experience with oil for this engine. thanks in advance

Heck, that engine dates back to the Pinto...

Without doing a UOA, I'd stick with Xw-30, but if Ford says 5W-20 is compatible, then you shouldn't have a problem.

I'd feel most comfortable, if it was my truck, after I did UOA's using both viscosities. I would go with the one that returns the best UOA.

i believe that ford has back spec'd every engine with the exception of the 3.9l v-8 and the 4.0l v-6. your engine would probably be fine with 5w20 but since you have been running xw30 and you know it works stick with it. you may gain a little fuel economy with the 5w20 but then again you may not.

I had the same motor in my old LTD with a 3 spd auto trans,Bullet proof motors.
I mostly ran 5-30 Amsoil, I like the idea of a UOA.
If the 5-20 is approved it might free up a couple of hp and maybe better MPG?

Go to www.flatratetech.com Ford service website you can ask to make sure the 5-20 is OK to use. Racer1236 is probably right.

Hey thanks to all of the info and for the welcome. I appreciate it. I like the idea of freeing up some more HP. This engine could use all the extra HP that is possible. LOL I know the engine is very durable and the owner before me put all highway miles on it and still changed the oil every 3K so I know the engine should be in great shape. I will try to get a UOA done and see what it shows. Thanks again!

FYI, I changed for grins from Amsoil 0W-30 to Redline 5W-20
in my Acura '04 TL. I wanted a full synthetic in the wt grade
specified by Acura/Honda.

While the engine runs fine and the same as when I had the
Amsoil in it my milage has gone down about 1.5mpg.
I will do my UOA and after I finish my case of Redline
I will probably go back to the Amsoil just for the better
fuel economy. Kind of weird as I thought the 20 wt
would get better milage than the 30wt.

I feel both oils are probably overkill for the driving I do
but I'm nuts like most of us here.
