I changed oil and filter on a 99 Contour 4 cylinder Zetec engine the other day. Assumed it was the common Motorcraft 400 (Fram PH3600 for reference)that is used on many Ford products. Double checked to make sure and found it called for a Motorcraft 2005 (Fram PH8316). I was curious and checked the Fram site to check the specs. Both filters are essentially the identical size, so what gives? I buy a couple and compare the 400 to the 2005. The 2005 for the Zetec engine has a plate about an inch down the center tube with only 3 small slits for oil flow. First time I have seen a filter like this.
I always fill the filters before installing it so that there is no delay in oil pressure build-up. With this filter, the oil does not pass the plate so I can not fill it. So I spin on the filter, and even empty, there is absolutely no delay in oil pressure when the car is started.
Can this engine be designed so that the spin-on oil filter is being used as a low volume bypass filter??
