My car was giving me a light tapping noise coming from under the valve cover when i start the car while its cold. the noise usually does not start until about 30 sec after starting. when i hit the gas the noise goes away briefly but comes back. this noise will go away after the car is fully warmed up.
so i decided to change my oil and slap a larger motorcraft FL-1A up from the fl-300 oil filter on it so i can have better flow. now the car is tapping all the time and the tap will now increase with my rpm's of my engine. however the tap disappeares at about 1500-1800 rpm.
what happend? ive tried different oils and grades from 10-30 to 15-40 and the tap is still there. im was getting 50psi oil pressure with the fl-300 filter. i havnt tested the fl-1a. is there a time period after changing the oil the engine taps all the time cuz of getting to much air into the engine? i did have the cap off the valve cover and the dipstick out the entire time i was draining the oil out and changing the filter. did i not give the engine enough time to get the air out of the system b4 messing with it again and switching oils? or is the larger oil filter the culprit? the fact that the engine is supposed to have a 4 1/2 quart capacity and now its a 5 quart capicity with the FL-1A and that im topping it off instead of just leaving 4 1/2 quarts in it?
And even if it is any of the above, it still does not solve my first problem! arghhhh!!
my car is a '94 ford tempo with the 2.3l 4 cylinder with 186,000 miles. yes 186,000 miles on a Tempo i know its crazy. but i have a friend who has 250,000 on his! and the only thing he needed to replace was a head gasket. well thanks for listening to my confusing post and please help
