Ford Taurus X...why used so inexpensive?

We're looking for a decent used car. Our original thoughts were "new Mustang w/V-8". Then we saw the cost and headed back to the used car...

I do like the 2005+ Ford 500 so I honed-in on searching for a decent used one.

Then the Taurus X popped-up in the search results. Interesting...larger than the 4-door...in fact it reminds me a LOT of our Vue. Which is good as the kids are getting older and we have to tote more & more stuff everywhere.

The price: many of the used '08 Taurus X are $13,999. This seems real inexpensive for such a vehicle. Now, I've been out of the used car market for a long while but this seems low. Are these a 'bad buy"? Is the market too saturated? Program cars?

Thoughts on this car or the 500?

They are great cars. I dont think a lot sold and they aren't made anymore. Our customers that have them like them a lot.

Buy one and find out...

Were a lot of them used as rental cars or in fleets? That'll crush residual values.

Most people probably don't know what they are, and when they hear Taurus they think of the 96-06 jellybean.

I think they got lost in all the hoopla. First the Taurus sedan being dropped and then the new 500 model, then the Taurus X. Now the brand new Taurus sedan.

Lots of confusion is what I believe is going on.

If you can get a clean low mileage Ford it maybe good.Upon fi^nding that car proceed to look carefully at the car. Check trans. fluid .It should have a bright red tint and should not have a burned odor. Burned indicates overheating of trans.Very bad.That is a good starting point

Makes me wonder how well the CVT in the freestyle held up....still see quite a few of those out there...

If you like them and can get one for a price like that, get it. They're good cars, they don't make them anymore so that could be why the cost is low.

For some reason they never caught on. I suspect because Ford customers were buying Explorers and Expeditions(with their greater profit margins) instead.

My wife drives an '08 Ford Taurus X. It has about 23K on it right now. It's been a really good car so far.

The only issue we had happened days after we picked it up new from the dealership. I noticed some transmission fluid on the garage floor. Apparently there was a metal burr on the shaft which caused a seal to leak. It was obviously under warranty.

I've been using Motorcraft 5-20 Syn. Blend and a MC filter. Other than tires (all factory tires are terrible!), air filter, etc., I've done nothing to it.

My Mom has a '05 Freestyle with close to 80,000 miles, zero problems or issues to date.

The biggest problem is finding a quality tire in that 215/65R17 size. The original Continentals went less than 30K before a couple broken belts, the replacement Yokohama Avid TRZs went ~50K and now they are rumbling.

At least Michelin offers a couple tires in this size now.

I bought mine a year ago. It was a program lease car with 68,000 miles. I've had it a year put 12k on it and haven't had a single problem. I paid 12.5k and added a 4yr 48k mile Ford warranty for 1500.00 and couldn't be happier.

Engine and trans are used in a lot of the other lineup of Ford's for 10' and even 11'.

I would buy another.

You did good...We get all our cars a year or 2 old also...We have been doing that since the 70's.
