Ford reusing Taurus

The Ford Taurus name is poised for a comeback, although the car itself is not.

Sources say Ford Motor Co. is planning to rename the Five Hundred sedan the Taurus, according to Dow Jones Newswires. Once the top-selling car in the U.S., the Taurus was discontinued in model year 2007 after 20 years of production. The Five Hundred, which hit the market in 2004, has struggled to match the Taurus' popularity.

Ford spokesmen would not confirm or deny the report.

In January, Five Hundred sales dropped 51 percent from the same month last year. Sales of the car were down 22 percent for 2006, and twice as many Tauruses were sold in its final year.

Ford lost $12.7 billion in 2006. The company is also planning to redesign the Five Hundred for the 2008 model year.

Ford Chief Executive Alan Mullaly, who joined the company in October, has wondered in public why the company did not do more to preserve the Taurus. The company sold some 7 million Tauruses over the years.

Ford shares closed at $8.33 Monday on the New York Stock Exchange.

No looks-appeal on the Five Hundred. It's very bland to say-the-least. To compete against other Euro/Japanese-blended looks, a face-lift is desperately needed. The Fusion rerpresents a new-age Taurus, but the Five Hundred doesn't. Perhaps they should rename the Fusion 'Taurus' and give the Five Hundred the Fusion name. But we al know that will never happen!

Ford needs to re-think the name. There must be a constellation out there in cyberspace-somewhere with a cool name beginning with the letter "F". If not, then let the braintrust there in Dearborn come up with one.

I don't see anything "Taurus" in the current Five Hundred. That face-lift will need to be significant - in my opinion.

Five Hundred looks like a chopped windstar van. Ugly huge hulking hood trying to be aero.

Fusion has an ok look all its own. Cursed to be Tempo-sized.

If they're going to reuse a name, do one with some resale value and fond memories. Galaxie would be cool and of course 500 was an ok spinoff but spelling it out just to get the "F" in there was moronic.

I don't know what you guys see. Everytime I see a 500 on the road I'm like "what is that thing, it is sharp". Everytime I speed up to find out what it is - its a Ford 500. Man, if I had the money I would buy one in a heartbeat.

They really need to redo the instrument panels on some of their models, which lack panache and look too much like those in an F-150. Even Volvo's look sleeker up front.

I agree about reviving some of the classic model names. Fairlane, Falcon, Galaxie, LTD, Taurus, Torino and Thunderbird all work for me. But they should be slapping them on new models, not as a marketing bandaid on an existing design.

Either that, or just go completely to a letter and number system like the more upscale Europeans.

The 500 platform is an interim model solution, built off the old S80.

I hear you. I like the looks of this platform. It's a refreshing change from the majority of what's out there.

I don’t find the look of the car objectionable – actually, I sort of like it for a large sedan.

In my opinion, it’s perfectly fitting and appropriate to slap the “Taurus” name on this car. Ford is putting them out with one of the last surviving 200 hp, 3.0L fixed-valve-timing V-6s. Just like a 1995 Taurus. In the last decade, all competing engines, domestic and foreign, have advanced by leaps and bounds, but not this one. Ford even has a 3.5L Duratec V-6 car engine, ready to install, but inexplicably, they’re not dropping it in their largest FWD sedan.

Taurus it is then!

And look at the bright side: at least they didn't stick an "I'm sucking a lemon" grille on it and rename it "Edsel"!

The new Taurus looks uglier than the old 500. That grill does not look good on the 500.

The 500 is a bigger version of the older Passat. The guy responsible was responsible for the Passat design. I hope Ford did not pay the guy much, since he did not do anything original.

I think the current 500 is an OK looking car, but who would want one? It is just a big bland, slow, boring american car.

Renaming the Five Hundred to Taurus and bringing back the Mercury Sable is a bad idea. Both conjure-up less-than-desirable cars, to me. While I agree the current Five Hundred needs to be revised, slapping an old, tired name onto the revision certainly will hurt sales.

The fact is that most people who don't pay attention to cars think anything Ford makes with 4-doors is a Taurus.

I can't count the number of people who continually referred to my Contour as a Taurus.

The 'new' version of the car still looks good IMO. The taurus name should go. Way too much like a certain female body part. Maybe that's way those darn tauri respond so well to a vigorous buff and rub-down? Deloris.. Mulva?

Drove a new 500 rental on a 500 mile trip recently. Nice enough car. competent and quiet on the hwy. 23mpg @80 mph.
Biggest problem was there is no place for your left foot. They put a dead pedal about 3 inches closer than the rest of the pedals making it extremely uncomfortable unless your left leg is three inches shorter than your right. How does a flaw like this make it to production ? I am only 5'10" by the way.

The '08 Taurus/500 will use the 3.5 engine.

Taurus will reach showrooms this summer.

CHICAGO , Feb. 7, 2007 – The 2008 Ford Taurus features more than 500 improvements that make it more distinctive, quieter, faster and safer. Highlights include new exterior styling, a new powertrain, a new all-wheel-drive system, more standard safety features – including standard electronic stability control – and structural upgrades to further enhance crash protection.

“Customers will find the 2008 Taurus delivers more of what they are looking for, including a strong design, high-quality interior, power and performance, must-have features like Ford Sync and a great safety reputation,” said Cisco Codina, Ford’s group vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service.

The 2008 Taurus features Ford’s 3.5-liter Duratec V-6 that delivers an estimated 260 horsepower – an increase of nearly 30 percent from the previous engine – and 245 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to the same smooth shifting, six-speed automatic transmission as the new Ford Edge.

Importantly to customers, even with more power and performance, the 2008 Taurus delivers real-world fuel economy similar to outgoing Five Hundred – thanks to advancements in powertrain technology.

New exterior design is more emotional, more Ford

The new look of the 2008 Taurus suggests the same proven emotional appeal of the popular Ford Fusion. The new Taurus features the Ford brand’s signature three-bar chrome grille, a sculpted hood with crisp accent lines and a new front fascia chamfered at the outer edges, adding more structure to the design.

New taillamps carry a strong, horizontal theme to the rear, while a new rear fascia houses dual chrome-tipped exhausts. Chrome side vents, door handles and mirror caps give the high-line model a more expensive appearance.

Ultra-quiet interior and plush ride

Interior quietness is often associated with a customer’s perception of overall quality. For 2008 the Taurus team has delivered interior quietness that rivals many luxury cars. The new sound package includes such technologies as expandable foam pellets in the A-pillars to reduce wind noise and the use of an advanced sound-deadening material called Sonosorb™ in the doors, headliner and pillars. Sonosorb increases sound-deadening efficiency by 20 percent while retaining the same thickness as the material it replaces.

Engineers also reduced road noise by stiffening the area where the rear package shelf meets the floor pan. Even the new climate control system is 50 percent quieter than before.

Taurus’s plush, confident ride is further improved for 2008.

Upgrades include revised shock towers that help increase front suspension travel by 10 percent, new dampers and springs in both front and rear, and a revised, retuned rear suspension.

One of the most significant changes is how the engine is mounted in the vehicle. The engine was previously mounted to the front subframe. On the 2008 Taurus, the engine and transmission are bolted to the body with hydraulic mounts to reduce vibration. By moving the roughly 600-pound powerpack off the subframe, engineers were able to better tune the suspension and, ultimately, create an even better ride.

Maximum convenience and space

A large majority of customers shopping in the large car segment place front seat roominess as a key want (86 percent) while many also prioritize cargo capacity (63 percent). Answering these desires, the 2008 Taurus features the most spacious interior of any large sedan, with best-in-class legroom front and rear and 60/40-split fold-flat second-row of seats. With the fold-flat front-passenger seat, items up to nine-feet long can fit inside.

Taurus also offers a number of must-have technologies. In addition to a standard auxiliary audio input jack, available convenience features include a voice-activated navigation system, a DVD entertainment system and factory-installed SIRIUS® satellite radio.

Ford Sync™ is also available on the new 2008 Ford Taurus. Sync is a voice-activated hands-free in-car communications and entertainment system which fully-integrates mobile phones and digital media players. The Sync in-car communications system was developed in collaboration with Microsoft and will be offered exclusively on 12 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products in North America beginning this year.

Building on safety leadership

Research routinely demonstrates that safety features are at the top of customers shopping lists. For example, nearly 70 percent of shoppers are interested in side air bags and 65 percent are interested in electronic stability control.

With these standard airbags and available electronic stability control, the 2008 Ford Taurus is expected to be segment leader in safety, capable of achieving five stars ratings in all four categories for the U.S. government’s crash tests.

Ford’s AdvanceTrac® electronic stability control system can predict the vehicle’s intentions using a sensor to detect and measure oversteer and yaw by monitoring the vehicle’s speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle. When the system senses wheel slip, engine torque is reduced and braking is applied where needed to help keep the car tracking safely on its intended path.

Additional standard safety equipment includes dual-stage driver and passenger front air bags, seat-deployed side air bags for driver and front passenger, and Ford’s Safety Canopy™ side curtain air bags for both rows. For an added measure of safety, a new steering wheel design recesses the air bag 15 millimeters farther away from the driver.
