Ford recalling 550,000 pickup trucks; transmission issues

That’s before my troublesome 10R80-which has the opposite problem-gets stuck in a gear, then violently upshifts or downshifts. I’ve learned to lock a low gear on uphill interstate merges in a line of traffic-or that low gear may not be available. I keep hoping it’s going to self-destruct, but at 90K it keeps banging along…

this is the lead frame issue been known for a long time. something an average DIY'er can do while they are servicing the transmission.

This used to happen waaaay back to the E4OD in my F250. Took a year and the intervention of Washington state's lemon law to finally get it fixed. Last penny I ever spent on a Ford. Terrifying to be cruising 60 MPH in OD and to downshift suddenly, un-commanded and peg the tachometer. I'm surprised that International/Navistar engine survived. But it did. Almost 300k Miles when I sold it on. Probably because it wasn't a hunk of ford crap.

Ford is recalling more than 550,000 pickup trucks in the U.S. because the transmissions can unexpectedly downshift to first gear

Admittedly, this only covers model year 2014 but that's still a lot of trucks and a pretty dangerous defect.

My dad and his buddies all drove Chevy cars and mostly Ford trucks and they were always teasing each other with things that today would be posted as memes.... FORD = Fix or Repair Daily, then the one I really got a kick out of was Found On Road Dead! I can not recall the Chevy ones but they did have some too. That is a wild number to recall for any company! WOOF!

The Ford 10 speeds are beyond terrible.

I wish they’d recall the 10r80. While I don’t know much, I’ll bet they do everything they can to avoid recalling it as the labor and material costs would be awful.

Exactly, Well known issue with the 6R80. From reading the bulletin, They're simply adding better rationality to the OSS diagnostic.....The PCM will ignore a implausible change in speed.

And change the lead frame if faulty?

Its funny on the customer pay jobs for those I always quote the wiring 0-ring sleeve on the back of the case as well as that "8" shaped seal from the valve body to the case. Almost every time people tell me I am trying to rip them off. Every one of our techs says "o sweet I forgot about those."

I was darned lucky all of my years driving the heck out of and putting all of my Ford / GMC trucks thru some mighty tough service uses. Highway miles and even tougher off road use. Plus towing trailers full of equipment (short term hot shot work) and boats all over the country. Since about the early 2000s it seems like Ford and GMC keep having these surprise re-calls and pop up out of the blue failures. A real shame cause that stuff always affects the poor wage roll workers jobs when things start slipping.

I'd decline the pass through seals as GM 6LxxE seals fit & I have an abundance.....Buy a OE 6L bellhousing, you get seals, Buy a OE 6L stator, It comes with seals......Then I got to buy a paper & rubber kit to complete the overhaul, It comes with the same seals.

I end up with 2 spare sets for every one 6L I build, I could be the mayor of 6L/6R pass through sealopolis :)

the American fleet is the oldest it ever been. average is over 12 years. Those old trucks were slap wore out by a 100k miles. now the even an eight year old truck is getting recalls because there are so many still on the road.

It's the energy from the turning wheels that is turning the engine, not fuel.
I considered that, but no fuel = no trans pump ‐- or at least reduced pressure (assuming auto) = no or very little direct connection from d/s to crank

If anything I'd expect to crater a d/s or u-joint before most engines would scatter?
