Just got a 2012 Fusion with the I4 and 6sp manual shift. I live in the SW where temp are often over 100. What oil would you recommend. Is a 5-20 prefered over say a 5-30 for use in these conditions. Any other tips appreciated. Thanks Smoky

If you are concerned about high-temperature protection, the 5w30 might be a bit safer. You will see a small drop in gas mileage. The Motorcraft 5w30 is a very solid buy.

100+ degrees does not matter since that is what the cooling system is all about. I'd use ANY API rated 5w-20 and you will be well protected. Pennzoil, Quakerstate, Mobil 5000 all would be excellent choices for around $16 for 5qts or less. Follow the manual for oil change interval. Take care, Bill

There's no need for 5w-30 really. It's in a light passenger car so there won't be any difference between 5w-20. Maybe the Ford engineers that made the spec and put 5w20 in the OM are wrong. It's under warranty I'd stick with 5w20

This is dead-on. Water-cooled engines are largely immune to the effects of high ambient temperatures, unlike old VW Beetles and older Porsches that are air-cooled. The engine's temperature is regulated by the radiator/coolant/thermostat. You can certainly use 5w30 for that extra bit of protection but a good 5w20 will do just fine. There are countless police cruisers (big V8s) that idle in traffic in Arizona and I can tell you for a fact they all run 5w20.

Any name brand 5w20 is good. Mobil, QS, Pennzoil, Valvoline, Motorcraft and Kendall are all great oils. Whatever is most available. I prefer Kendall/Motorcraft myself.

Use the lowest viscosity that is within the temperature range in your manual. A lower viscosity can give you better gas mileage. Also, use Motorcraft.

If I were driving a late model Ford product I think I'd go with Motorcraft 5W-20 synblend. No better bang for the buck in my opinion. If I decided to go full syn I'd opt for the QSUD for it's very reasonable syn price point. As state by almost everyone, ANY quality 5w-20 will give you plenty of fine motoring. Enjoy
