No its as red like any other ATF. It doesn't stay very red for too long though. After 15-20k miles it loses its red coloring pretty quick. Our Mazda2 had 32k miles on it and when I did a cooler line flush what came out was almost as dark as new engine oil, maybe with a slight pinkish haze to it.

My local Mazda dealer wants over $11 per quart, the local Ford dealers are around $9.50. I did some googling and found an Arizona based parts supplier that sells the Idemitsu M5 quart bottles, case of 12 for $86 with free shipping. That's the cheapest I have found it.

That might be a europe thing. The bottles in the USA look nothing like that and also have completely different labels. Idemitsu makes the USA product.

Dealer prices are pretty steep. The best prices I've seen were on Amazon and eBay. About $7.20/qt for a case of six and about $5.60/qt for a case of 12. Still quite high vs Valvoline and Castrol import ATF's. That was Idemitsu Type-M fluid by the way which as far as I understand is identical to Mazda Type M5 or M-V and is backward compatible with M3 fluid. Is that correct?

Depending how many miles you have on it, I don't doubt it. It turns tan very quickly compared to other ATF's. But out of the bottle its as red as any thing I have on hand. I have a few FNR5 bottles, a Mobil 1 ATF bottle, and some generic Dex/Merc at home, I'll put a drop of each on a paper towel and take a snapshot later.

From what I read on the mazda 6 forums, the transmissions had a tendency to get REALLY hot and later mazda 6 models added ATF coolers or bigger ATF coolers.
But I would take that with a large grain of salt.

Also, are the following identical fluids just in different packages?

Thank you. My first one was a bonehead question... M-V is the same thing as M5 just spelled with a Roman numeral... duh.

But M3 or M-III appears to be old product, suitable for power steering in late model year Mazdas (like 2012-2015 Mazda5), but not for the A/T.

I actually got a call back from Idemitsu employees at the Indiana plant. That facility fills bottles that Mazda sells at dealers nationwide. The Idemitsu part number is a similar formulation to Mazda OEM and meets M-V spec. However, it's not identical to Mazda OEM. Mazda must not want its formulation to be available in the aftermarket.

Hi,

I've been digging the web for a while but still no certainty. Does anybody know if there is equivalence between WSS-M2C938-A (Ford internal reference 1776431) and Mercon LV? WSS-M2C938-A appears on the back of the can used by Ford service. I am asking because I own a 4F27E transmission in my Fiesta and I am trying to avoid the OEM replacement cost (about 35 dollars a quart, 7 quarts in total). If I can put an equal sign between the two standards (WSS-M2C938-A and Mercon LV), both belonging to Ford, it's easier to find a suitable fluid (Castrol Transmax, Motul ATF VI).

Nobody knows. I've tried the local forums and my garage owner.

In other words, can I safely use a Mercon LV automatic transmission fluid for my 4F27E, although it does not stipulate the other standard on its label?

Nothing specified about the ATF. I've been looking thoroughly into the manual. However i see Ford specs for 1.0 ecoboost engines where they put these standards in the same place.
