Just picked up a 2009 fusion. Calls for fnr5 fluid. Has 73k miles looks darkish. Wanting to do a drain and fill. Which current fluids are on par with the fnr5 spec. So far i only found maxlife atf. Not looking for amsoil or anything. Just looking for something easily found. Im looking to stay within the same specs too. I think ford fnr5 is 30 at 100c and 7 at 40c.

If I am not mistken FNR5 fluid is the same thing as Toyota T-IV (or very similar.) It is for the Aisin Warner transmissions. I use maxlife in my Equinox with confidence.

Ford FNR5 ATF is essentially same as Mazda M5 which is what my 2014 Mazda5 calls for. You have lots of choices: Ford OEM (Motorcraft), Mazda OEM, Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic, Castrol Transmax Import Multi-Vehicle, Castrol Transmax Import Multi-Vehicle Synthetic, Red Line D4, etc.

Negative. FNR5 as stated is Mazda M5. Both Mazda and Ford have their own version of T-IV/3309 fluid.

Mu 2007 Fusion has the same spec. When I first bought the car I changed the ATF to Mobil 1 ATF which had the spec for Mazda,(same fluid as FNR-5) but it was Mazda M V. Soon after I put M1 in the trans M1 dropped the spec, so I called Mobil tech and they said the fluid was compatible to my Fusion but they shortened the list and removed the Mazda spec. He also told me the M1 fluid was fine in the Fusion. Well, 198K miles later and my trans shifts great, up and down. I had the dark fluid thing like you when I first changed out the FNR-5 fluid. Today my fluid stays bright red and never turns dark. I change it every 30-40K and a new filter every 80K or so.
