Wow, I am suprised to see a Wix for a Ford with the wrong end bypass valve. The Wix replacement for FL1A and for FL299 both have the correct Ford-preferred bypass in the threaded end of the filter. I am also suprised that the Purolator seems to have better media than the Wix. Well, maybe I will go back to FL1A filters. They certainly cost less than Wix. But the FL299 is too expensive, but since Purolator rated so highly, I can go back to the Purolator version of the FL299, which is the only Purolator I have ever seen that has the Ford-preferred threaded end bypass valve. Thanks for the filter study.

Thanks for the specs. I wonder about the flow rate specifications. Is there a standard pressure drop for this measurement? Wix lists a maximum flow rate for thier filters (11 - 13 gpm) but don't list a pressure. I am guessing that is the flow rate at the relief valve setting, but don't know.

correction to my specs. from last night:

the cm-6731-fl820 are:
2.5psid @ 3gpm,5.6 psid @ 10gpm, 7.3psid @ 13gpm.
filters 99% @ 20u
burst press.= 600 psi
bpv= 17-24

here are the press specs. for the wix 51372

11-13gpm @ 5 psid (wix tech support told me these)
3gpm @ 1.4 psid (wix tech support told me these)
bpv= 12psi
filters=50% @ 12u, 95% @ 25u

there are 12 filters in a case....ed? would you take apart the newer fl820s with the flow tube has alot bigger holes for flow...look inside the filter of the newer fl820s and you will see instead of the many small holes the new one has many large holes...thank you for your hard work!!..i love my fords!!

I have added a new filter to my comparison - a Donaldson P550965. This is essentially a lower cost version of the Amsoil EaO11 Filter. It has conventional media, and a Nitrile Anti-Drain Back Valve, but otherwise it is the same as the Amsoil filter. The direct page for the Donaldson Filter is http://home.earthlink.net/~cewhite3nc/id14.html . The start page for my FL-820 Alternative Filter Comaprison is athttp://home.mindspring.com/~ed_white/id7.html .

I used Wix for two short OCI's when I purchased my 2001 Taurus 18 months ago. Now I use nothing but Amsoil EaO11.

ed, i don't understand something...when i cut open fleetguard i found it to be very high quality much better then fl820s.. also k&n,donaldson,what is it you see that i don't?

It's a difficult comparison without the data for the media. I would tend to think that the racing filter would be not suitable for long term non-racing use. The media is probably substantial to endure the alleged high flow/high transition conditions that one encounters in racing.

Outstanding documentation and detail.
