Ford Escape 2.0 Third Generation

Why do transmissions cost more than the value of the vehicle? I'm dealing with this on my neon,

For an older, low value vehicle, they may be giving you a high price to make you go away. Engines and transmissions are way more expensive than they were a few years ago not just because of inflation, it because when new vehicles were in short supply and got extremely expensive, people who would have otherwise replaced a vehicle got them repaired. Given normal supply and demand, engines and transmissions now cost more. Also add in all the recent new transmissions that are epic fails like all the CVT'S and some of the truck transmissions which are also inflating demand. It's probably never been better to own a transmission repair shop.

I had a 16 Escape S with 2.5L NA engine, and 6 speed auto.

Right at 100k the torque converter blew up and took the rest of the transmission with it.

Local transmission shop could never get the transmission right and ended up refunding me money and I sent the car to auction.

Oh, that's too bad, I did some reading and I think these are, on average, about average reliability... The 2.5 was only one I was considering.

Wife had a 13 2.0 eco boost. We bought in college like at 91k miles and then ran it up to about 165k when we sold it to get the X3. Was very reliable, lots of power, comfortable. Only repairs in that time frame besides tires/brakes/oil/battery was a CV axle seal. The transmission did have a slight flutter like at 30-40MPH IIRC, but it was there at 91k and never changed or got worse. Was more prominent when it was cold.

EDIT: and I still see it around town too! I checked the carfax on it and it looks like since then, it's gotten another set of tires, some AC work (curious about it, AC always worked great when we had it), and something EVAP related. Think it's up to 180k now.
