I finally got around to installing this fluid, part number XT-4-QGL, in my Corolla.

I've reported here in several threads how any synthetic fluid produces notchy shifting. Synthetic GL-5 was unshiftable. Previously, I'd had the best success using Valvoline conventional GL-5 with a bottle of Lubegard gear fluid supplement. That cocktail has been in for the previous 10,000 miles and all of a sudden over the last few days, it became very hard to shift into 3rd and 5th gears. It's been very cold here lately. I thought something was broken in the trans; linkage, bushings etc., but I checked everything and made sure the clutch was releasing completely and it is. So I installed the Ford fluid to see if it would fix the issues. It has and it's shifting better than it ever has. I don't know if the Valvoline fluid all of a sudden broke down or what. never had that happen where all of a sudden, the trans shifting becomes almost impossible (using a fluid that previously has worked well in the past) and a fluid change fixes it.

Found this thread on a Suzuki forum where others have reported the use of the Ford conventional fixed their problems and that synthetic GL4 didn't work. In some older transmissions, synthetic must be too slippery to get the synchroes to work.

I am not sure I follow your chain of events and fluid useage/type completely, but it appears you were using a high viscosity GL-5 differential fluid that was too thick for cold weather operation and didn't have the proper friction modification.

Dedicated or application specific MTL's such as the Ford XT-4-QGL have lower viscosities for the same SAE grade and contain the additives necessary for synchro's.

Most MTL's these days contain synthetic components.

What fluid does the Toyota manual specify?

It is not cheap, but I use Redline MT90 GL-4 in my 2011 Tacoma 5-speed manual. Shifts very nicely.

I don't think a MT will ever be completely smooth until it warms up, but Redline is the smoothest so far.
 
I just changed my 140w gl-4 gear oil out for pennzoil synchromesh mtf. Worlds better shifting and now I don't drop 200RPM letting the clutch out in neutral.
 
Both of Fords GL4 75w90's are excellent. No need for full synthetic in a low stress application.

Another option are the GL4 75w85's from GM Mopar Redline Hyundai Nissan ...

Sounds like an LS additive victim!

The Valvoline I used was older stuff that didn't say on the bottle it had limited slip additive. Maybe it still did.

I'd like to try the Nissan MTF 75w-85 if I can confirm it is not synthetic. Like I said, for what ever reason, this car does not like synthetic MTFs.

I can agree on that one. I tried RP Max Gear one time and it shifted horribly. Would crunch every gear and was really hard to move the shifter,and shifter movement felt really rough.

The Valvoline is a very thin Synchromesh type fluid; roughly 7 cst @ 100C. Way too thin for anything that calls for 90 weight oil which is 15+ cst.

Valvoline has the Professional MTF that can only be purchased at Valvoline Instant oil change centers and it I believe is a synthetic 75w-90 GL-4.

Why not use a 50 weight MT1 MTF fluid? Better synchro performance in my experience (several hundred different gearboxes) than gl4 and HDEO 50w. The latter usually working out better than GL4. Strictly speaking if this is an out of warranty period application. I don't like any level of bevel gear EP additives in a high speed gearbox (generally speaking, exceptions exist).

What specific products are 50 weight MT1 MTF? Would that be like GM Synchromesh? 50 weight seems very thin for applications calling for a 90 weight gear fluid.
 
I'd stick with a GL-4 only spec even though the manual claims it can be GL-5, you get better protection and less wear with the
GL-4 spec in a synchronized manual gear box.

I'd go with the Valvoline Professional or Pennzoil Snychromesh
products, especially if you have cold winters, you will instantly feel the improvement with these thinner fluids.
 
75w90 and 50w trans fluids usually are very close in viscosity.

And even at even some lube OEMs, gl5 75w90 and 50w mt1 are the same lube but the latter has the EP add pack deleted. General statemement. Exceptions exist. Pleanty.

Getting back to the root of the OP's problem, which was his trans started having sticky shifts after a cold snap. I attribute this to the snake oil additive being used. Actually, appears to be a vegetable oil additive. Here is it's patent:
