Ford CEO traveled to China.

Yes, Walmart is a major disruptor. How many smaller stores go belly up when Wally World enters a community?
There are areas that will not let a Walmart or a Costco be put up as protection for the small local vendors.

Disruptive innovation speaks to affecting established competition.
Disrupts the supply chain. Not the market.

Amazon is disruptive. Consumers skip the store completely. Traditional retail disrupted.

Walmart is just another box store. Like when Quick Trip moves in and puts the three old sleezy gas station out of business. Suppliers change. People still buy same amount of gas.

Farley is trying to out fox Trump. Both Ford and Tesla are competing for control of the importation of Chinese EVs into the US market. This why Tesla stock is rebounding.

It just seems obvious that smaller electric vehicles are the future. No matter who likes it or not. I see people daily driving, Silverados and f-150s and even duallys sometimes. Not towing. Just driving to work. I do the math in my head. It's got to be.... $300 a month over what a basic commuter car or even a fancier sedan would cost them? Just because of ego or pride or whatever? It's pretty strange in my opinion. I'm not too proud to drive a crappy electric commuter car for A fraction of the money.

They don't have to be crappy just because they are smaller though.

Ya. I think I've mentioned it before. I have a cousin in the Bay Area who has had his own little operation for over a decade. He has a PhD in Electrical Engineering and told me years ago that they could hire 1000 EE's in China for the cost of 10 or 100 in the US.
Foreign labor is so inexpensive and is knowledge essentially free. I was just reading last week that the line workers in China are not making a lot of money and manufacturers are running on ridiculously thin margins because the govt is trying to keep as many people working.

That doesn't make any sense, as the alledged support from the government has to come from taxes. Poor people and struggling businesses can't pay taxes.

here's the income tax scale from China:

Annual taxable income (CNY*) (1)Tax rate (%)Quick deduction (CNY)
0 to 36,00030
Over 36,000 to 144,000102,520
Over 144,000 to 300,0002016,920
Over 300,000 to 420,0002531,920
Over 420,000 to 660,0003052,920
Over 660,000 to 960,0003585,920
Over 960,00045181,920

divide by 7 to get the dollar equivalent.

People making $20,000 a year would pay about $350 in taxes..... and businesses pay taxes on profits (25% at most)

By most estimates China has printed 4X the money since the GFC as the USA has. It’s not completely known because it’s a closed system and they don’t publish, so it’s estimated based on flows.

Either way, China can subsidize stuff by printing money, not taxes, just like we do. The difference being they subsidize manufacturing and we subsidize sitting at home.

The CCP doesn't have to be subsidizing but they can via sale of bonds without having to increase taxes. It's no different than the US which has essentially runs deficits YoY for decades.

Remember the Belt-and-Road initiative where countries financed through Chinese state banks these large public works projects which were built by Chinese workers? Not exactly analogous but speaks to their state of mind.

The problem is a large percentage of college students today have absolutely no business being there.
For sure! From what my son is telling me college isn't what it used to be, and nothing like he expected it to be. Let's just say at 37 years of age he's disappointed, extremely. Best I leave it at that.

Is that the college's fault or the student's fault?
I went back to college after dropping out so many times. Finally stuck after I got sober at 33 and got my 1st degree at 40. Let's just say DeAnza Community and San Jose State paid off. It was a long haul working 50+ hours and dragging my rear to class at night. I would give myself Saturday afternoons off and Sundays were for other work. It was actually good for me because free time was not my friend.

By the way, DeAnza has a well respected auto technology school. Students are in demand by dealerships. You might know there are a lotta exotics and expensive cars around here that need qualified mechanics. They even added EV sections a couple of years ago.

I tend to accentuate the positive; others seem to complain about everything. I say, "What are you gonna do about it? You are either in the solution or the problem."

Great post, the entire thing but wanted to highlight this well formed sentence ^^^^

Complainers lack the drive to better themselves. Doers make it happen, no matter how many times they fail, they pick themselves up and try again. There arent many uber successful people in this world who laid down, cried and complained every time they failed, they went out and did something again. It's what made the USA great, now we look for others to make our world right, we really do not need that or those people.
ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE

Have you walked a college campus recently? It's an eye opener according to my son who entered college a year ago after 16+ years in the USN. As mentioned earlier nothing like he expected it to be.

YES!
Why go if you dont have a clear concise idea of your objective at least by the first year. There are so many options for those focused on what they want to do with their life. Tech/trade schools to start and if you end up with the basics from that, you can go into the field and very good chances your employer will PAY for further education to step up grades in employment. Especially the medical field.

Yes, I spend time at Stanford and Berkeley attending seminars. Other schools as well, just not as often.

Regarding your post, what is your solution? In my career, I learned to never approach an exec with an issue without a corrective plan of action.

OK, have you spent a semester on campus recently and interacted going from class to class? I've done seminars too, only at night, and not in quite a few years.

My solution? I'm retired doing fine. I'll continue doing what has worked for me for decades. There are problems not worth solving for me, and I can't save the world. I'm glad I'm not going to school now that's all.

"fault" is a hard and relative term.

The younger population has greatly decreased from the millennial generation. These colleges are accepting a higher percentage of kids in to pay the rent.

The high schools are incentivized to get kids to college. What percentage graduated. What percentage went to college. Those are the stats they track. No teacher gets good reviews for sending kids to work at a factory.

Society has told kids that anything resembling a blue collar job is undesirable - even if its a job that requires a lot of skill - like an electrician or plumber.

Not sure who to blame. Seems like a big circle of problems.
