Forbes-General Motors Is Headed For Bankruptcy

What a load of horse hockey. The only thing anyone at Forbes knows about cars is that they have to tip the driver.

+1 Complete Rubbish

It is interesting to me the way the media manipulates people. This article is more of a Forbes review of the 2013 Malibu than a clear look at the financial situation at GM. The reality here is that Forbes is attempting to stir the old debate on the bail-out.

The media loves nothing more than to use OP/ED pieces to stir up old “real” news. I found a similar thread in the recent reporting on the Mars rover. Every article included the cost of the project numerous times. Even when the cost had nothing to do with the substance of the article.

Well if the gov't does have to bailout again atleast they won't have to again tell pension funds holding GM Bonds to eat their loss and bugger off.

There have been tons of automotive companies that have gone bankrupt while making good products, and plenty continue to exist making bad products. If GM is headed down that route and an article is written I don't understand why it would be based on a qualitative analysis of one vehicle and not a quantitative analysis of GM's finances.

Aug 2, 2012 ... GM Reports Second Quarter Net Income of $1.5 Billion and ... The second
quarter 2012 results include $0.1 billion in restructuring expenses.

Sadly that is true. Lots of lousy cars from good companies, and lots of good cars from lousy companies. Mediocrity = existence.

I think the author has it right. The new Malibu is a failure as it really offers nothing above the others in the segment. It was rushed and they seriously underestimated the competition. The 2013 Fusion is a looker with great MPG. The 2013 Altima looks great with great fuel economy. The Camry and Accord, well, the lemmings will scoop them up. Etc.

Outside of the Camaro (which is starting to look dated), what great product has GM introduced? Volt sales are lagging, the new Impala looks like another Rental Queen.

They need to get their stuff together like Ford and Chrysler and make stuff that people want. Stuff that is good in many areas. Playing games with "No Haggle Pricing", and "Chevy runs deep" isn't going to do it when the product is mediocre at best.

I think this is a cleverly conceived and placed "hit piece", aimed at the Obama administrations support of the bailout of GM. Of course Forbes would be interested in the guy who will speed up the elimination of any regulation over business at all in the USA.

Not that I am any fan of the current side of the bad coin Obama, the "other guy" is nothing more than a different side of the same tarnished and crooked coin.

My post isn't political because I think the ENTIRE system is completely corrupted and broken, dare I say beyond repair.

People forget that GM wanted to reorganize through bankruptcy long before the bail out.
If they had to pay back the taxpayer they would be in serious trouble. That's why the poor old taxpayer owns stock in GM. If they were lent $50 billion they would have to pay interest and the principal at some point.

It's interesting that they only focused on that one C&D review as the basis of the entire article. After reading the new Malibu's reviews from other sources, it doesn't appear to be such a bad car, although maybe not the best. And the whole legroom issue seems to be blown out of proportion. You're doomed no matter what you do... make a large car and people will complain that it's a big boat. You make it smaller, and some will complain that it's now too small. Can't please them all...

The US Passat (C&D comparo winner) is huge, but that's about it. What else is so great about it?

Those who need a larger GM sedan can wait for the upcoming Impala.

The current Camaro is being replaced soon with the lighter, better handling, Alpha platform (now used on the Caddy ATS).

The C6 Corvette is MORE THAN just a "success", and the C7 is out next year, or the year after.

And, love it or hate it, the Cruze is a success, and will be GM's 'world car' soon.

call it whatever you want, the UNIONS were given the moolah. Basically the entire thing was handed to them.

it should have been allowed to die a natural death. Could have come back very quickly, we might have got some great companies out of the deal.

Well said, AntiqueShell, this is pretty much my thoughts, too. The Forbes family is a card-carrying member of the ultra-rich elite and the Forbes magazine is their mouthpiece. They will continue these "sneak attack" articles in an attempt to have everything stacked in their favor.

Agreed, it is weird because I see this "talking point" brought up constantly and it seems that it is not brought up by ordinary consumers but by paid editors, or on car forums by paid viral or stealth marketing shills who seem to have some weird agenda.
Yes I call it a weird agenda. I think that the consulting and marketing firms must see this tool as some kind of odd weapon against competitors. It's actually silly.
