Follow VW's 10K OCI?

I recently purchased a 2011 VW Jetta SE with the 2.5L 5 cylinder motor. VW recommneds 10K OCI with synthetic oil. I am curious as to how BITOG members feel about this?

Should I simply follow their recommendations and forget about it? One would figure they did enought research and testing to safely recommend such an OCI.

I drive 50/50 city/highway. I am under warranty for 3 years/36K miles (I believe) and do not want to do anything to void the warranty.

I guess I need reassurance from oil experts regarding the 10K OCI is perfectly fine for my car. Any thoughts?

I'd use the correct oil specification, and yeah, I'd probably run 10k on it. Changing it every 5k certainly won't void your warranty, and might bring you additional peace of mind. I was going to do that with my Camry, which called for 10k mile OCIs, until I sort of unexpectedly traded it.

Let the dealer do the 10k OCIs. Do your own 5k OCIs on a VW 502/505 approved oil, just in case anything ever happens.

I think you will be fine following VW's OCI. Just be sure you are using the approved oil.

My 2011 Fusion specifies 10,000 mile OCI's as well, using conventional oil!

It will take some getting used to but I am going to try and follow Ford's OCI.

Does the VW not have a proper OLM system which calculated the OCIs based on driving style/conditions? Do they just recommend a 10K OCI for every Joe-Shmo that buys the car?

No OLM, just a 10k OCI. IIRC the sump is like 6.5L.

10k OCI is fine on these engines when using an appropriate synthetic oil.

That was due to non-syn being used. The motor itself was actually quite good.

10K OCIs are snap for most engines with a "quality" sunthetic oil. I have been doing that for 33 years with all sorts of engines.

+1....tig 1 is right on.....50/50 city/highway is doable with a quality synthetic.

The 2.5 does not make the demands on the oil that a turbo VW does.
I'd say that as long as you use a spec oil, 10K is safe.
While the car is under warranty, stick with a VW spec oil.
After that, there are many other oils that would work just fine in your engine.
If you are like me, load up on GC or Mobil 1 0W-40 when it's on sale or part of an oil change special and change it every 5K.
I am a little OCD, and 10K is a safe interval, unless it takes you more than a year to get there.

I'm going with Mobil 1 0w40 and 7.5k changes. Should be a good deal, I think. The 2.5 is really pretty easy on oil and has a large capacity...>6 quarts.

My only other thought is Redline 0w40 for the full 10k.

If you are worried this much then I would just go with 5k ocis.

My co-worker does 10k on his 2.5 in his 09 Jetta with the correct oil. It has 60k now and runs well with no engine noises.

It is where you were doing it. Farm areas permit that. Riding around Los Angles is different than riding around Sani- Flush Idaho

A 502/505 Oil will do 10,000 OCI on a 2.5 without worries.

Where people get into trouble is using AAP 5W30 Syn because its $3.99 a Qt. (Its not a bad oil but its not designed for 10,000 OCI).

I think your new VW will require 504/507 specs, but the idea is the same. Follow the 10k OCI with the correct oil and you will see that engine go for 300k with few issues.
I just drove home my tech's car last week and realized the odometer said 500k in miles not kms. I asked and he said original turbo/ clutch/ etc. He said 10k OCI when I remember and always do the timing belt job in full on time. FWIW.
