Fluky driver door glass damage

Quick update. The glass continued to degrade with cracks during the remaining 1100 miles after the incident occurred. The glass has two paines, and was aftermarket tinted. That may be a reason the glass did not "shatter".

The damage to the mirror plastic occurred prior to my purchase of the truck. I just have not yet purchased replacement mirrors.

The unique thing is the glass can be replaced with opening up the door with a tool. Here is a video of the process. I sense this method requires experience with glass replacement in this F series- might not work well for a first timer. Below is a video on the process of replacing the glass without opening the door:

Apparently, they have started using laminated glass.
Supposedly to help prevent ejections during an accident.
Much harder to break through.

My '13 F150 was tempered glass.

Laminated glass will sometimes vary depend on make/ model because it will deaden sound. Some low end trucks will not have it- while upper models do. I don't think it's government mandated- but if I am wrong feel free to site the source.

You are correct:

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard #226 (FMVSS 226 - Code of Federal Regulations 49 CFR 571.226)
Mandatory on 2020 model years and beyond.

Side laminated glass has been used on many luxury vehicles for sound deadening before 2020. Most cars have 1 layer and I've seen Rolls Royces and Bentleys with 2 layers. I would surmise the laminate can provide additional UV / IR protection and maybe even a heating / automatic tinting feature.
