FL820s with distorted media

If they look like that, I would be sending a sample off for a used oil analysis. Badly distorted media isn't a problem, only a symptom. Better fix the real problem.

FWIW, my last one looked like this:

I would not hesitate to use another.

What I'm using currently:

This is a glass-media Fleetguard Stratapore.

That's one good reason to use a Fram Xtended Guard filter.

FRAM is far from the first, and not the only company to offer this.

Donaldson is the pioneer, with Fleetguard, AMSOIL and Royal Purple, as well as the TRD filters all offering this same feature.

You forgot ACDelco Ultraguard ... same construction 10 years ago. Now copied by Royal Purple and TRD.

Looks like every member on this board has a serious coolant leak into the oil sump.

Yes, also likely made by Donaldson. Or using the Donaldson-licensed media.

You have an agenda he doesn't

Don't have to be a engine leak.

Could be that the moisture in the engine is attracted to the paper element and is removed from the engine, in which case the filter is doing its job .

And that would not be a bad thing now would it ?

That's true that it doesn't have to be a coolant leak, but the get enough condensation in the oil to do some serious pleat bending would mean someone is hardly ever getting the oil hot enough to drive excess moisture out of the oil.

Every internal combustion engine produces water as a by-product of combustion, so every engine is subjecting the oil & filter to some level of moisture. Just because there are some wavy pleats doesn't mean there's a "coolant leak" going on. And besides, I would say some pleat weaving isn't even related to moisture in the oil.

I have seen some wavy pleats on cut up unused filters. However, I strongly believe the occasional severe cases in filters with otherwise good records are due to excess moisture or coolant.

1 Filter Guy said it was in the one old thread I dug up recently.

2 I forget who posted that Baldwin video recently, but it says the same thing.

3 It only makes good sense. Water swells paper. Most engines have very little water or coolant in the oil and most filters don't have wavy media. A few engines do have problems and occasional filters have wavy pleats.

I really don't think the Purolator hype is helping anybody but Purolator. I would hate to see somebody putting off identifying a problem one more OCI. While glycol may be hard on filter media, it is murder on bearings.

What does that have to do with moisture in the oil issues? I'm sure that Purolator filter media is just as susceptible to water in the oil as any other filter out there.

What's bad is if a filter like an ST with the open Ecore center cage design is subjected to excess moisture in the oil. As we have all seen many times on this board, there could be a lot higher risk of media blow-out with an Ecore when the media gets harmed by water and the media gets flattened against a big wide-open window in the center core. Just normal PSID in the filter might cause a blow-out under those circumstances.

Some more distorted media:

This was an FL-1A sized Purolator PureONE from the Lincoln:

Is that glue crud supposed to help keep the pleats straighter? ... or did someone get sloppy with the honey while cutting filters open during breakfast?
grin2.gif
FRAM uses something similar on their air filters.

I'd say those pleat waves were normal use. You rarely see a filter with laser straight pleats after some use.

This is out of a huge Stratpore filter with built-in bypass:

The K&N oil filters I've cut open have a very "stiff" media ... it's almost hard feeling. Probably why they stay straighter.
