Father in law recently moved and his old place has a kitchen sink leak for a long time that he neglected. The laminate counter top is rotten / bulged and there's water damage in the cabinet under the faucet.

A contractor he found from a cabinet / hardware store said they only do replacement for the entire overhead and under the counter cabinets together. With the cheapest stuff it would runs $7k. I have a handy man / contractor that is willing to do whatever I want to and I'm thinking about replacing only the cabinet under the sink, reuse the cabinet door, and get a new laminate counter top. Can this be done? I'd figure as long as the door is the same it should be good enough, and there're other wear and tear in the house that we can spend money on instead (like peeling wall paper, replacing worn through carpet, corroded pipes, etc).

That's horse [censored]. Get with a dedicated and competent custom cabinet guy. Home Depot, Lowe's et al sell only junk imho.

Upside is good cabinet guys know and work with good countertop guys. win/win
