Following a common theme i've seen here today where Balut and Smalahove . I thought i might add this topic.

My Five:
  • Pig foot souse (I make my own at home)
  • Cow heal stew (Order it from my favorite Jamaican restaurant)
  • Iguana (in Panama)
  • Hawksbill Sea Turtle (not since made illegal)
  • Jamaican Stew Peas (made with salted pig-tails)

Some of these reflect my background of being Latino Caribbean. I was born in Panama and my Dad was from Old Providence Island/Colon, Panama.

Civet Cat (tasted like a skunk spray at close quarters, not a real feline)
Turtle (unsure, was inside a rice mound)
Stomach parts. Pig.
Further down parts. Pig.
Lamb liver. Cod Liver.

Head Cheese
Blood Sausage
Calves Brains
Chicken Feet
Stinky Tofu

First three tied to my dad's Lithuanian heritage (noting goes to waste). Chicken feet at an Asian buffet. Stinky Tofu from a visiting Taiwanese grad student (whew, the worst.....the tofu).

"Local vegetable"

This was all during various visits to China.

By far the most off-putting was "local vegetable". We were never told what it was because our host simply didn't know the English translation. He just knew that Westerners disliked it and enjoyed sharing it to watch their reaction. It became a right of passage in our extended group that if you ever traveled to visit Sam's (his Western name, not his Chinese name) team in China, you had to try "local vegetable". It was absolutely vile.

Whenever I visited China, it seemed like a good excuse to have a feast. The Chinese ordered all kinds of delicacies (to them LOL). I had snake. That was about as uncommon as I'd go. I still remember how excited people got for the chicken feet.

Calf liver and onions
Gnummareddi
Escargot
Trippa alla Napoletana
An unidentified bug I swallowed while mowing the lawn yesterday afternoon (choking hazard).

Live drunk shrimp -China
Hatching live chicken in shell - China
Monkey brains -China
Fried cockroaches-China, movie theater instead of popcorn
Chicken foot -China

I haven't eaten too many crazy things that I can think of. A lot of these are pretty tame.

Natto (Fermented soy beans. Like a bowl of snotty bogers. Yuck.)
Lutefisk - I'd eat more of it if it was served to me
Menudo - Mexican tripe soup... very tasty and not as weird as it sounds
Pickled pigs feet
Sopa de los piernes de pollo - Mexican chicken feet soup... Not bad
Stilton cheese with worms or larva of some kind - stinky blue cheese, I picked out the wigglers.
