i work at a service center myself and always tighten filters by hand.
i notice that more of the quicklube's or dealerships tighten the **** out of them, sometimes i actually bend or poke holes in the filter with the jaw-type pliers just trying to get them off.
a few times i've actually unscrewed the stud from the block before the filter unscrewed

If you encounter this again..puncture the dome end of the can with a screwdriver. I've seen that work, and many HD mechanics do this as routine, when they take a filter off. Especially if it's been overtightend.
Obviously don't destroy the can doing this..
it releases the pressure. But you better be prepared to catch the oil that comes out or you'll have a mess.
