I tighten all of mine as tight as I can by hand and call it good. No need for a wrench.

i work at a service center myself and always tighten filters by hand.
i notice that more of the quicklube's or dealerships tighten the **** out of them, sometimes i actually bend or poke holes in the filter with the jaw-type pliers just trying to get them off.
a few times i've actually unscrewed the stud from the block before the filter unscrewed

Yea, I always hand tighten filters and never a problem. I can always get them off by hand but sometimes I have to really work at it. Just hand tighten with moderate force till it won't turn anymore. No need to just crank it as hard as you can.
My last two filters I've hand-tightened only- doesn't seem to be a problem. If so then I'll snug 'em up a bit with the wrench.
Funny thing happened today when I tried to use the plastic filter wrench on my Wix 51344- would NOT fit! A quick trip to NAPA solved that problem! Now I'll be able to remove it when due...

This is the guy who tightens the filters at the factory and at the local quick lube place. he is one step above the grease monkey and the bulk oil baboon in the operation.

If you encounter this again..puncture the dome end of the can with a screwdriver. I've seen that work, and many HD mechanics do this as routine, when they take a filter off. Especially if it's been overtightend.
Obviously don't destroy the can doing this..
it releases the pressure. But you better be prepared to catch the oil that comes out or you'll have a mess.
