I have a 2008 Nissan Altima with the 2.5 4cyl. I drive 13 miles each way to work about 70% highway and 30% city in Florida weather. My annual mileage is 10,000-10,500 miles. I want to try a one year OCI and wanted some general advice. I am planning on using a Fram Ultra filter. M1 with the current rebate looks interesting but Mobil 1 Extended Performance doesn't seem to be that impressive over regular M1. I have had good luck with PP in my family Van and am also considering it but the claims M1 makes directly on their website about 12 months or 10,000 miles is nice to see as apposed to PP who just says stick with your manufacturer OCI (7,500). Does everyone think PP is as good or better than M1 for 12 months or 10K?

Is a Fram Ultra filter a good 10K mile oil filter?

I'm just curious. I will be doing a change and running it to 10K on the Focus soon. Looking to find a filter that can do it.

Actually the Fram Ultra is a great 15k filter.

I can say it's a great filter that's the one part I'm convinced of. Fram rates it at 15k and I have personally ran cheaper filters for 7k and cut them open and they looked great. If you see the construction of the Fram Ultra you will see it's solid. Many think it's one of the best values in a extended change filter.

I suppose the other question is do you know something is wrong with your car where it would be shedding metal particles?

M1 and pp are equal in my eyes and we've seen many used oil analysis where pp still had life left after 10000 miles.
However m1 is guaranteed for 10000 miles. We've seen used oil analysis here where m1 was used for in excess of 15000 miles and still had life left so the reality is both products are capable of 10000 mile drains
HOWEVER
you are driving 13 miles per trip, which is short tripping which means fuel dilution will be an issue.
So in your particular case if you want to run 10000 mile drains I'd go a grade thicker to compensate for the fuel,or forget the extended drain idea and go with a conventional at 5000 mile intervals

I don't think I agree with 13 miles being a short trip.

I have yet to see a used oil analysis where fuel dilution correlates with wear. Lots of used oil analysis come back with super low flash point and low wear.

I would do the 12 month and not worry one bit.

If you are worried do a used oil analysis after the 12 months.

If I am not mistaken Nissan recommends 7.5k on conventional in this engine, so you are not even going far outside manufacturer recommendation.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil and filter paired together are guaranteed for 15,000 miles according to the Mobil website.

I agree that I also haven't seen a used oil analysis that proved a wear increase with fuel dilution however at what point does it affect wear by thinning too much.
And in 13 miles is short tripping if anything is. Unless it takes half an hour to drive those 13 miles.
From cold if I hit the highway and drive for 13 miles at 55mph my oil temps are barely 150f. I need at least 20 miles to reach operating temp on the charger. The truck is a bit faster because the oil is warmed and cooled by the radiator.
It's close enough for me to not want to risk it. By all means though you go right ahead.

Short tripped my g8 regularly and no signs of fuel dilution. That's something a UP A can tell you us happening, but it's not something I would assume and jump viscosity to avoid. Your just as likely to have an engine that oxidized the oil and pushes it up a grade too, so you would end up two steps heavier instead of at your target...

I'm going to use Mobil 1 Extended Performance and Fram Ultra for 10k mile OCI. Both say up to 15k miles so I feel confident they are good enough for 10k OCI.

Before going to a 12 month OCI, I would second Brons2's advice.

I had a 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe with the same QR25DE engine. It was generally pretty easy on oil, as shown by a number of oil analyses I had done which you can see here. I believe 7,500 was about the longest I took an OCI.

+1

Mobil 1 Extended Performance costs just a few dollars more than standard 10k Mobil 1.

I agree here. If you are absolutely going to do a 1 year 10k mile semi-severe service interval I would say use Amsoil Signature Series as it is 15k miles severe service rated and has a high TBN of almost 13.

Otherwise I'd stick to whatever is on sale at 6 month oil change intervals. If you were driving 23 miles each trip I would say no problem running 10-11k on most syns.

As Clevy stated most engines will not reach optimal oil temp in a 13 mile hwy run.

I questioned that to with my own truck.
Its new and I run it 7 miles on the highway to a convenience
store. I'm running 50-60 mph. Two stop lights. I get out and am back in the truck in under 5 minutes and go back the 7 miles. Is that the same as going and then a complete cool down and then driving again? That's the issue I have?

Thanks!

My new 2016 Outback reaches 200F on the oil in 5 minutes, my Chevy truck takes about 10 minutes for the oil pressure to drop which I'm thinking means it's reached the right temp. I think your fine with 13 miles. My commute is 17 miles and I idle my truck a lot and all my 1 year 15k oci's have been perfect. My wife's 12 mile commute was just as good too. Ran Amsoil then but since changed to 10k OCI on any syn due to price.

Perfect? I assume your getting used oil analysis done then?

Thanks for all the advice all. And just for notes sake the 13 miles is actually 13.8 miles and it takes almost exactly 30 minutes to travel that distance. Most of the time the ambient temperature is 89 degrees. Heck last Christmas it was 83 degrees out lol. But again good points and I think I might just stick to Dino at 6monts.

My 1994 LS400 engine is not the same as 2008 Altima 4-cyl engine, but I used synthetic oil(various brands) with low to mid-price oil filter for 1 year/15-20k miles OCI since 1998-2000, with conventional oil the OCI is half at 6 mo/7-10k miles. The engine is running very good, no sign of sludge when I change oil the last 20 years. The old oil flowed very fast as new oil.

Any oil filter can hold 6-7 grams or more debris, if an engine produces more than that in 10k miles it is dying, no oil and/or filter can stop it.

Summary, any name brand synthetic with mid-price or high end filters such as Fram Ultra can easily do 10-12k miles OCI, especially with your long 26 miles round trips daily in Florida.
