FIOS router

Trying to understand what function the FIOS router provides beyond a WIFI router. The ONT is next to power meter outside the house and then coax to the FIOS router. So the question is what function does the FIOS router provides beyond a normal WIFI router. It does get as input coax, not a network cable with RJ45. The FIOS router is not the latest off white one with WIFI 6 but one model back.

if you have fios television it provides you with on-demand and tv guide. i just have the fios internet the tech ran a cat 6 direction from the ONT to my router which is a tp link. my ONT also has a coax port but in my situation it's not being used.

Sounds like you’ve got a modem/router combo, sometimes called a gateway. This is pretty standard equipment for internet and TV service.

I have the newer ONT so maybe in the ONT is a coax and RJ-59 port.

And there is nothing in the FIOS WIFI router specific to FIOS. Just a FIOS branded WIFI router.

Good question. I requested for them to give me Ethernet at the ONT, and so I don’t use theirs. I figured it served kind of like a cable modem and router, but no idea if that’s true.

It’s very easy to get them to turn on Ethernet at the ONT and then use your own router.

I have not looked inside the new ONT. But I did buy a Cyberpower UPS for the ONT and another for the WIFI router.
