Finally took the Valvoline Restore and Protect plunge today

There have been a few oils over the years that seemed to grab a huge amount of attention when they came out. The original Mobil 1 full synthetic comes to mind. I know when I was in high school auto shop in the early 80s that was talked about like it was some sort of unicorn magical elixir that we could only hope to afford to put in our cars one day. A few years ago Pennzoil Ultra Platinum seemed to grab the headlines, and has been my oil of choice for a while now. Now the past 18 months or so, Valvoline Restore and Protect has seemingly taken the oil market by storm. And by the thousands of positive reviews you can find online (many right here on BITOG), rightly so. So after doing a lot of research and reading, to include this forum, I decided to take the plunge and did the Valvoline Restore and Protect oil change today on my 2015 Hyundai Sonata 2.4l. Working on the 2nd engine, first went out at 122,800 miles in August of 2022. The "new" engine now has about 50,000 miles on it, running nothing but Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W20. Upped that today with the Valvoline Restore and Protect to 5w30, again after a lot of research pointing me in that direction. Now my replacement engine has not shown any oil burning / loss up to this point, so it's been doing well, and also doing oil change interval between 3-4,000 miles. I was just a little over 3,000 miles today before the change. Also using a Purolator One filter. I had been running the Boss on my Sonata and in my 1996 Ford Ranger as well, but after seeing some information that seemed to point towards those filters possibly only filtering somewhere around 45 microns or larger, I decided to drop "down" to the One, which is a little cheaper, but, has a higher efficiency rating. I might be what many would call old now, but you can teach me a few new tricks.👍

@Bigvman23 - from all I have read here at BITOG, the Purolator's of late are debatable for overall quality and efficiency. The Premium Guard filters (Carquest versions from Advance, MicroGuard from from OReilly's, NAPA Gold and others) are the current highly discussed versions.

I don't know filter efficiency but Mann+Hummel Korea produced, factory Hyundai/Kia ones are pretty solid IMO. Very thick hard to cut can, nice bypass setup, traps Valvoline Restore and Protect carbon. https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/hyundai-kia-26300-35505-mann-hummel-korea-5400-miles.407934/#post-7623692

I keep seeing that the Boss and the One are still good, I have a few One's that I got a while back and kept in stock when I caught them on sale in Amazon. My and my wife's car both use the same size so I stocked up. If they have indeed diminished in quality I definitely have no issue going another route once I run out of my stock.

Welcome to BITOG by the way.

A nice box of disposable gloves, a filter cutter, obsession to see your own stuff to make your decisions for future........c'mon jump in the water's fine. 🫨 🤭

Naw, no need, that's what I've got several of y'all guys for so I can ride your coattails. 😆. But I promise to give y'all the credit.😁

definitely stick to the oem hyundai/kia filters on that theta engine. they have a specific high pressure bypass valve rating that aftermarket filters like purolator rarely match. aftermarket filters are known to cause cold start knocking on those engines. plus since Valvoline Restore and Protect is actively cleaning carbon out you want the thick media of the oem filter to trap the debris.

It's so rare that someone reads the forum and captures all of the advice here and actually follows through doing the right thing for their car. Kudos.

Unless you cut a couple of your own filters you won't know the status of those particular ones for quality. ranted it is after the fact but when you go through the filter thread for cut apart ones you find common themes.

This was the last Fram Endurance I used last year. the center tube where bypass mounts has "tabs" for pressure that creates spaces. The bypass spring itself wasn't flat. The media was glued unevenly.

So far I'm learning NOT to own a Hyundai Sonata 2.4, but I'm curious to see your results on the new oil.
Well, bought mine brand new, and I typically drive the wheels off of my vehicles. Other than the original engine puking out on me, it's a really nice car. The replacement engine has been good so far, fingers crossed. I'm also curious to see what happens. After just 3 days of having the VRP 5w30, it seems to me (by ear) to run at the least a little "smoother" than the PUP 5w20, if not actually quite a bit smoother. We'll see eventually how it works out.

I'm just giving the two of ya a bad time - 2 people in this thread had their Sonata motor go bad. I've been following this Restore & Protect oil for about 5-6 months, waiting to see others' results, before I add it to my Tacoma (2005 w/ 251k) or my Mazda 3 (2017 w/ 99k). My daughter's 03 Civic burns about 1qt of oil per week, so I'm wondering if this stuff would fix whatever is causing that.

Pretty much the ideal use case right there. For all 3 really but start with the Civic

If it’s burning that much oil it’s likely too far gone but if won’t hurt to give it a try. Just don’t expect miracles here 😬

I've also just put VRP in my wife's 2020 Elantra. Though hers is the 2.0 engine and doesn't have the same possible issues as my 2.4 Theta, her model COULD possibly have a piston ring issue. We took it in to be bore scoped and evidently it was fine, but it has been burning oil some. It's driven very mildly so there's a good chance carbon deposits have built up around the rings and they are "stuck" after 80,000 miles. I stayed with the 5w20, the next change will be with 5w30. I taught my wife to do a better job of monitoring the oil and how to do the ol "Italian tuneup" every now and then. Hopefully positive reports on that one too in a few months.

Yeah - that car wouldn't even function if it wasn't for the Honda badge.... very forgiving for a hard life it's had. It needs to be rebuilt or all gaskets replaced.

All very good moves. Very smart to get on top of it ASAP.
