After confirming Donaldson finally produced some of these filters back in August and September, I discovered they allocated a whopping 16 filters to my metro area. Each truck and heavy equipment/fleet retailer had 4 units in stock. Compared to contemporary WIX prices, these are still a good value at about $8.14 a piece. To be fair, I could still buy a Purolator One for a buck and change less, but I'm not sure how confident I feel about M&H cost cutting. Although it was about as challenging as I thought it would be to find solid information on these filters, I did get a hold of some specs on the manufacturer page. I also called the tech line. Although they had no additional efficiency data to provide (besides what's on the website), they did confirm that the media is cellulose. I'm assuming that precludes the inclusion of any wire backing and all that fun stuff.

Anyway, I should be covered for a while, regardless of whether I opt for annual (5,000 mile) or semi annual OCIs, these should prove pretty solid. I like that they are officially listed at 50% efficiency at 6 µ. These are supposed to be match specs for the Ford application listed (also Ford FL-500S), so 20 µ efficiency SHOULD be in the 95% neighborhood from what I know. Pretty good efficiency overall for cellulose media. One other thing I do like about them over other competing products is that they have a silicone ADBV, if you want to judge off appearances. Beyond that, I don't know if there's anything particularly remarkable about them. They weigh in at 253g (8.9-9 oz, depending on how you round) while comparable filters come in at about 258g (9.11 oz) if that matters to anyone. ;) Here's a couple other pictures for those who're curious.

I have to ask why the excitement over the Donaldson oil filters? Donaldson is top quality though.

These days it seems just finding a brand that doesn’t tear or suffer gross deformity is a big deal. It’s a shame that Trico had to go mess with a good thing on the XGs… a double whammy- cheapen the filter construction while simultaneously jacking the price up $2-4 depending on the market location.

I’m glad I was a hoarder, I have 5-6 years of original XGs on my shelf even changing them every OCI, let alone if I run each filter to 20k… ICEs will be outlawed federally before I run out of filters 😂

I think part of it is that we want what we can't get our hands on...😅 The other part is that it has two things the Fleetguard oil filters didn't have: a silicone ADBV and good efficiency numbers. I'm still frustrated by the Fleetguard situation, because they are a little heavier weight, the paint is a little better (FWIW), and they're a little cheaper.

But either their efficiency measuring metrics are messed up or the media truly has poor efficiency (30.8% at 21 microns. I've spent more time than I should have had to in order to figure out what's going on. Whether it's by email, telephone, whatever, I get the same answer: that's all there is and it's not likely measured in Beta ratio and is specced after WIX. Anyway, enough of that.

But yes, it would be cheaper and easier to just go to Menards and buy a $7 Purolator Pure One, but like @SubieRubyRoo said, there's a question of trust.
