What is with the holes? Does the filter electostatically capture dust that might pass through the holes?

Geez, is that used? What MERV rating is that and how long in use? If it's a higher rated filter, you may want to consider something around 7-8 unless you really want to replace the blower motor. Looks like either it got so clogged the airflow pulled captured dust/dirt through it or maybe its some sort of charcoal infused layer to help mitigate odors. Or that 3M is getting filtering material from K&N 😁. Incidentally, Filtretes are WAY overpriced IMHO.

Apparently HVAC guys dont like Filtrete, they are too restrictive and no one changes them often enough. They say go cheap Home depot 8 merv and better 4" thick ones and change 2x/yr if they can fit your holder. Now that one with the holes looks like a charcoal version, prob same results as the cabin filers in cars we discuss. Holes? Marketing gimmick? Too restrictive without?

Thanks shortyb and Geekhead, you came up with the only explanation which makes sense, it is a charcoal filter for odor control.

I have no info at all on the filter. I snapped this pic at the moving company whose trucks I maintain. Every so often they have to dispose of customers' stuff in storage because of overdue storage fees and this was among stuff going to garbage.
