How can you tell is the oil filter bypass valve opens or not?

Are you wanting to know how often it opens or whether or not it's operating correctly/ opening (and closing) as it should?

You can always install differential pressure gauges in the engine bay.

I have a restriction gauge on my Matrix, and after 39k miles restriction is ~9", so I don't bother it.
